I attempted to discard a bag of trash this afternoon at the Pahoa Transfer Station. At the entrance a large pile of every conceivable form of rubbish was heaped on the right side of the locked gate, which displayed a sign that informed CLOSED TODAY FOR HOLIDAY.
If you plan a garbage run tomorrow you may wish to call first, and find out whether they’re closed for the observed Veterans Day as well as the actual Veterans Day. If they are, I pity the workers on the early shift Tuesday. By then the mountain of refuse will be so high they may need an EIS and a permit before any changes are allowed.

It happens on every holiday. They try to let people know through the newspaper,on social media, notices at the transfer stations and the pilau people still dump their trash at the gate.

The transfer stations will be open on Monday because the legal Holiday was Sunday.

We went there about 1:00 to fill a 5 gallon water jug. We knew the dump would be closed, as I read it on a Facebook page. But, there was quite a pile of garbage there to the right of the locked gate. Saw a few people pull in with trash, and turn around and leave. A truck pulled in with a washer and dryer to dump. They were sitting there deciding what to do, as we left with our full water bottle. I feel sorry for the Tuesday morning crew once again, to have to deal with this mess. I believe they will be closed Monday.

Where are the "aina protectors"? Can't stand a single rock moved on Mauna Kea, but never get after their cousins dumping TV's on the side of the road...

I stopped by to drop off some metallic waste Sun. morn.
I saw several cars lined up at the entrance gate tossing bags onto a pile outside the gate.
I pulled a u-turn at the exit gate and headed on into town to HD.
I have to admit, I was a bit disgusted to see them tossing their garbage on the ground outside the gate.
EDIT:
It kinda looks like the first idiot tosses theirs on the ground.
Then, everyone afterwards thinks its OK to throw theirs down too.

Sign on the Keaau gate says “NO DUMPING”. You can even see it from the highway.

Sounds like both transfer stations need a hidden web cam to video the idiots and fine them heavily.

Where are the "aina protectors"?
Toxic materials in the junk heap... Check
Runoff that will enter the water table... Check
A blemish on the 'aina... Check
Did the people dumping trash follow every regulation, every requirement necessary (and posted on the gate in front of them), as people of honor, guardians and caretakers who respect this 'aina for future generations? Listen carefully, is that the sound of crickets? Perhaps Protectors standing watch over endangered crickets?
