Teaching on the Big Island II
#1
Hello everyone,
Just wanted to thank you all for the wealth of information you provided after I posted my questions on teaching in a previous thread. Both my boyfriend and I interviewed last Sunday in NYC and were given written offers of employment as special education teachers on the Big Island. Although where and at which school is as yet to be determined, I am thrilled and very much excited about moving over the summer. My interviewer (from Oahu) expressed surprise that the Puna district is my first placement choice but said that since BI apparently has a shortage of SPED teachers there is a good chance that there will be open positions in the area. I am hoping to find a fairly reasonably priced flight (not likely, I know, in the wake of ATA and Aloha's demise) sometime in mid-April during my current school's spring vacation to visit. Mahalo nui loa!
Aloha,
Erin

Congratulations! Although the SPED designation will be helpful, prepare to not know your location until right before, or even after the school year begins. It happens a lot. It makes finding housing tricky.

The person who interviewed you knows something [Wink]

Many of the public school teachers that get assigned to the Puna district who do not live in the district try to get out of the Puna District at the first chance they can. [V]

Best of luck, congratulations, and be prepared for some new learning experiences. You may find yourself learning more from the kids than you can teach them. [8D]

They don't call Puna the "Wild West" for nothing.

The more we speak up... the more they will listen.
