This was in Waimea but similar to some of the lava hikers, (that weren't home owners in the area) they were trespassing and probably knew they shouldn't be there.

A way of making them pay back all the man hours and $ needed for the rescue.

Fortunately everyone involved in the incident is alive, so any penalty is minor when compared to possible injury or loss of life, for either the hikers or the rescuers.

The defendants showed remorse and apologized:
Bailey also told each defendant that the state, landowners and rescuers hope the hikers learned something from the incident.
“We have definitely learned our lesson and realize that our actions do have consequences and we are actively wanting to do anything we can for the community to repay them,” said Alianza, who was first to face sentencing.

The court pointed out the seriousness of the hiker's actions:
there was so much risk and people placed at risk

Hiatt sentenced separately Hovda, Lao and Jacobsen to 80 hours of community service, noting the stiffer penalty was because they were UN/YWAM staff members.

I hope this is a sign of how the courts may handle similar cases in the future. Group trespassing, repeated unlawful assembly, especially when it's clear certain people are ringleaders and bear the brunt of the responsibility. Their followers should be held responsible when they ignore posted signs, or instructions from law enforcement, especially if they've been involved in prior incidents and should know better. Arrest them, bring them into court, and hand down an appropriate fine or sentence.

...is nothing like Protectors occupying sacred public land. Should they choose to protest on, say, Shipman property, then yes, they would be sentenced to community service.
