GET surcharge from State (in addition to County)

It's just another half-percent. For the teachers who cannot afford to live here.

If the county and state GET bills pass, the tax on Hawaii Island would be 5 percent on the retail level, up from 4.25 percent. The Legislature could delay implementation.
The state surcharge would increase GET revenue by about $438 million, according to the state Department of Budget and Finance.

Previous reporting on this issue says $200M for DOE and $50M for UH. I'm guessing the other $188M will be spent on rail.

That $188 million is just a drop in the bucket. I bet that won’t even pay for two year’s worth of maintenance.

Oh, sure. Let's throw good money after bad. Five years down the road, the schools will be producing the same miserable underachieving results, and they'll be telling us they need yet more money to do better. How about they be required to adopt at least two meaningful reforms shown to produce results elsewhere before they can even ask for more funding?
