So across from Hirano's store, there's a shelter with picnic tables next to a water tank. I always see people hanging out there- I've been curious for a while, so I'm finally asking- what's up?

That would be the spot where a couple of years ago I asked a couple of guys sitting there for directions to a street (turned out to be a paper street). They couldn't help on the directions but offered to sell me some pakalolo. They quickly left the area when I responded with an emphatic "Hell No".

LOL Oink...
Technically that is a public park. Realistically it is the drug drop location on the highway. it is getting cleaned up since the no drinking ordinance started being enforced by the local police. At least it puts them in one identifiable location that I can avoid! (I live up the hill fro the Hirano store...) Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!

It is also one of the places you can get a good view of the volcano, too. The other good side-of-the-highway-volcano-viewing-spot is Pepeeko on the other side of Hilo.

They have good cookies at hirano store. Usually sell out fast. You can even order them.

It is also used as a bus shelter by some (esp. now with 2 more buses on the Volcano/Hilo route...) but mostly not...
