Peppercorn Growing & Propagation
#1
Hawaii is the only state in the US where peppercorn can be grown.

The vines are cultivated on metal screen rolled into a vertical tube, the cage then filled with organic plant materials. That might make it a good crop for Puna with our rocky soils.
The video by a farmer on Maui, is worth watching even if you’re just curious about the origins of that pepper you sprinkle on your eggs in the morning.

I grow it. Been going for a couple years now. It likes shade. Haven't gotten any flowers yet though. Made a trellis out of wai'wi guava for it to grow on and it seems pretty happy.

I have one very unhappy plant. Maybe I'll try putting it in the shade per ElysinWort.

I have 2 plants in little or no shade. The plants are dense growth with flowers but no sign of peppercorns for about 2 years. They are about 8 feet tall.
