East side Hawaii road repair. Nothing happening.
#1
Is it just me noticing this or has anyone else experienced your car being jostled around constantly when driving in Hilo, and other areas in Puna too.

There are so many streets and roads that have potholes, divots, cracks, damage from water undermining, etc. In addition to that I do not see those guys in county trucks doing any repair. It would make sense that they would section streets off and fix one area at a time but I see absolutely nothing happening anywhere in terms of repairs. What the hell are these guys doing during the day? Have they been on vacation for a year or too? All hiding at the base yard playing poker?

In places in the mainland they do section by section working at night so as not to cause congestion. What is going on here? In addition, the last time I remember a big project was at bayfront and that took several years but it wasn't even the county. I believe it was a private contractor name Isemoto in the light green trucks.

I understand the failure of our government in so many ways but this is blatant and irritating. We taxpayers fund their salary. We should be seeing repairs but the entire crew is hiding somewhere, not to ever be seen. Any of you notice them working anywhere? Because I sure haven't.

Lots of road damage to lower Puna from the eruption. Roads are terrible. Leaving Pahoa on 130 going towards Kalapana there's an area many of us drive halfway into the emergency lane to avoid the huge and growing larger potholes. Lots of them goes on for over 1/4 mile.

Don't forget the recent fuel tax increase (for roads) and GET surcharge (for transportation).

County was given an electric bus (with charger) in February 2018, it's been sitting in the base yard since then.

Yes there are some horribly dangerous sections like right past Pahoa heading toward Leilani by that guys roadside market. The potholes are so bad that I see people riding the center line or off on the side because when you run them over it causes the car to drift. There are similar dangerous sections on the volcano highway going around corners. I hit one during the nighttime and caused me to drift towards oncoming traffic. Scary.

And yes chunkster, not terribly surprising but frustrating because you know they are somewhere getting paid, just not while working on our roads, which is their job title.

Here is an East side road repair being done in typical Hawaii style.

Preparatory work for a two-year construction project on Kalanianaole Avenue begins next week.

From Monday through Friday, contractors will begin exploratory work on a 1-mile stretch of Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo from Kamehameha Avenue to Kauhane Avenue. The greater project will include resurfacing work, new sidewalks, a bike lane and a left-turn lane, as well as other upgrades such as drainage improvements, water mains, retaining walls, new street lighting, new curbs and new signage.

The project is estimated to be completed in the first quarter of 2020.

2 years to complete 1 mile of road. They dig a little here and there and some days don't work at all. They started by building rock retaining walls by the Mazda car dealership,About a dozen guys stacking and cementing together rocks while 2 cops directed traffic because one lane had to be closed.
