Four Seasons Resort Lanai has applied for permits to build a small telescope on their grounds.
The company said the facility would consist of a PlaneWave 1-meter telescope and a 20 1/2-foot dome.
“Why not instead of a telescope and all this money they’re going to invest in it, why not bring in cultural practitioners like a master navigator, a farmer who looks at stars and moon phases, and sits with a visitor to Lanai and says, ‘Hey, this is what makes us different?’†said Tabura.
The old ways are best and nothing should ever change. Except for my cellphone and Facebook, which I need so I can post about how progress is a bad thing.

Have people lost all perspective? Here’s a photo of the Four Seasons Lanai complex:

Apparently everything already built is fine, but they draw the line on a telescope with a dome the size of a large jacuzzi? Because it’s a telescope? Have we reached critical mass insanity?

PS. I see no reason why the 1-meter telescope can't be built and have a random farmer talk about moon phases and someone who knows how to navigate using the stars. Why does it have to be "instead"?

A small telescope (though large for a typical home owner) would be a draw to attract vacationers for sure. Maybe they could open it to the public too. I'd get in line to use that thing.

It turns out the Four Seasons resort is sacred. And for what they're charging, it better be!

Since protestors are now against ALL telescopes, even those on private property which provide nearly all the employment for local residents on the Pineapple Island (anybody see a pineapple there lately?), perhaps now's the time to consider Winter Protest Season:
Have you noticed a chill in the air on Saddle Road recently?
Or heard the news that yet ANOTHER telescope is planned?
At the Four Seasons Lanai?
Beautiful Lanai is open for all your winter telescope protests!
Camp on our sandy beaches, under warm sunny skies.
After a long day blocking the road there's:
Swimming!
Snorkeling!
Sunsets!
Flights available on Hawaiian Air, or take the ferry from Lahaina.
Best of all, there's no need to build a "library" so you can get in out of the cold.

The point is that we now have a small but powerful group of people who, when they see the word "telescope", are immediately against it. It doesn't matter where it is or what it does, astronomy has become a nasty word for some, hence my reference to the middle ages.
