So, all non HI5 plastics willnowgo into a land fill. Paper also. Ibelieve it also says that tin cans must go in the metal bins? Glass will be treated as normal. We're going to make an attempt to avoid anything in plastic containers.Hopefully these items willbeavailable in glass.
But, we as a state, country, and world, had better get on the stick on this. Plastics either need to go, or be made in a biodegradable manner. There could be incentives to businesses to change the industry etc, if we had a leader in the US that cared about the environment.

Too bad we can't create an innovative local industry around this waste stream.
We don't even have a composting facility!
Another option (not available because "interstate commerce") would be to require plastics to be reusable. Anything bucket-shaped would find a use around the farm...

Last I had heard, glass containers are just being ground-up and added to the landfill as well (can anyone confirm?). Without China willing to buy, all these left-over containers are just trash again - where's that waste-to-power facility when you needed it (oh yeah, NIMBY here, but Oahu has one...)

Glass can be used as an additive in asphalt or concrete; it can also be crushed and used as fill material. Instead, it goes in the landfill.
Asphalt is imported to Hawaii ever since the batch plant closed.

Yes, the Hilo land fill is full. They are hauling the trash to another land fill, I think on the West side.

Unfortunately, with the exception of some metals and in some areas cardboard and paper, all the 'recycling' programs have been ponzi schemes to make people feel better about themselves and ship our waste several thousands miles away. And make a bunch of people rich conducting one of the biggest scams ever conceived. At the end of the day it's cheaper to make new stuff than recycle old stuff. For whatever reason China and other countries have decided they aren't going to be the West's landfills any more. They were never recycling most of our waste they were at best stacking it up and at worst dumping it into the oceans. They probably stopped accepting our waste because the financial cost on their fisheries exceeded what they could earn by pretending to recycle it.
The president of the Philippines vowed to "Declare War" on Canada if they didn't remove the trash they sent to his country (
https://thehill.com/policy/international...-canada-if ) I pretty much did this paragraph to show this isn't just a USA / China problem.
In my great grandparent's days the women used to recycle the animal feed bags into clothing. When the feed companies caught on they started making the feed bags in different dress patterns that changed over time so they could have some variety in their wardrobe. The recycling was done by the end consumer, much like Kalakoa's bucket comment suggested.
Once you get government and private company corruption involved into something, the results are never good.

The asphalt binding material is imported. There is a facility on Oahu that stores, and distributes this material, statewide in Kalaeloa. Grace Pacific, Yamada, and Jas Glover have three permanent batch plants on this island alone.

Grace Pacific did modify their Kona plant to reuse recycled asphalt material. It was used when they generated asphalt material for the Queen Kaahumanu Highway widening Phase 2.

And the Ewaste thing is just as bad or even worse. that market is starting to fall apart. Were going to need to figure out what to do to not produce so much non reusable packaging. Bring back the glass soda bottles and deposits, start making electronics last like it used to 40-50 years ago. consumerism is like a disease.
