Minimum wage in Hawaii will be $12 in January and $15 in 2023. $31,200.00 starting annual wage for teenagers flipping burgers, who needs math or science?

"terracore - I didn't see the positions for "cook for bland Asian food restaurant"?"

Look again, L&L is clearly hiring!

Terracore, I feel you, but if you compare to what we were making in the year 2000, that future $31,200 is more like $20,000 due to inflation. Also, kids often don't get 40 hours a week and payed vacation/benefits, they get just enough hours to stay part time without benefits, with crazy schedules where they work partial shifts on more days, and can be sent home unpaid if there is not enough work.

Also, adults that can no longer find work due to outsourcing and automation are forced to take those entry-level jobs to make ends meet. Not everyone can be a computer programmer, skilled tradesperson, or do-nothing politician...

Until Hawaii County/State creates a positive business/investment environment people will be settling for these poor jobs or leaving for better ones. We're not unlike other small towns, except the kids have to go much further from homes and their support networks to find a decent job.

It's more like $12K against the local cost of living.

crazy schedules where they work partial shifts on more days

That's a scam designed to keep the kids from holding down a second job.

STOP COMPLAINING. Jobs is a good thing for people. Sheesh.

STOP COMPLAINING.

Statement of fact. A complaint would be more like "Puna Kai is too far" or perhaps "Puna Kai needs a Wendy's".

Hey I'm all for high minimum wages. The higher the better. Now that I'm no longer an employer. A $15 minimum wage is going to cost the employer about $30/hour after all the taxes and insurances are added. Maybe that's fine for businesses that are subsidized by tax dollars (anybody who accepts EBT) or are so large and have a corporate tax structure such that they don't pay any taxes themselves (Amazon).

But the small businesses, the mom and pops, they can't afford a bunch of employees at $30/hour so they close. Or the people crunching numbers decide not to open a business in the first place.

The minimum wage in Holland is about $3.90/hour: https://www.government.nl/topics/minimum...nimum-wage

Which cost will be passed along to the customer in the form of higher prices.
