"This is an important message from Hawaii County Alerts and Notifications:
This is a County of Hawaii Mass Transit Hele-On Bus route update for Thursday, January 2 at 5 in the afternoon.

Due to a shortage of ADA accessible vehicles, the following Hele-On bus routes are CANCELLED tomorrow;
Waimea AM
Intra Kona 2
Pahoa 2
Pahoa 3
Volcano AM
Volcano PM

We are very sorry that we are unable to provide services for these routes."

The transfer stations have been closed off and on but this is beyond belief !!

Beyond belief? Not at all - we have an incompetent county government who will spend millions pandering to special interests, but doesn't care spit for the wellbeing of the majority of the islands residents - but they keep getting elected, so why expect any change?

So on the off chance someone needs a wheelchair lift bus and its broken down, they simply cancel all of the routes so that all riders are affected? What total morons.

It's because of the ADA- they'll get sued for discriminating against people who need ADA services so they have to shut down the routes for everybody. This is a moronic response, a more appropriate measure would be that the county provides a number for people who need ADA equipped vehicles to call and they send out/pay for an equipped taxi for the few patrons who need such services.

Harry wants to take the get tax away from transit

Mass transit budget is $22M/year.

GET increase adds an ("estimated") $50M/year.

Thus, redirecting the GET increase "frees up" $28M/year -- clearly there just aren't any transportation projects in need of funding, so "freedom" to spend the GET at whim is like printing free money.

Vision Statement: Create a transportation agency the rest of the world recognizes as the best.

Mission Statement: Provide safe, clean, convenient transportation services for the residents and visitors to the County of Hawai‘i.

Is part of the transit woes caused by a shortage of good bus mechanics? Missmanagement? Both?
I'm retired, and I'm not getting back into fleet maintenance. Did that for 24 years on freight hauling trucks, trailers, and dollys. We were an independent shop with lots of business. If someone would have approached me back then with a juicy offer to move to Hilo and fix trucks or busses, I may have jumped on that.

Aren’t these “civil defense” notices, both on the buses and dumps just a ruse to get some public outcry for more funds?

Seems to be backfiring.

Or maybe not.

Cheers,
