I just received this urgent message (email) from Hawaii County Democrats:
Hawaii County Democrats: We need your help NOW – TODAY.
Please take 15 minutes to personally call Mayor Harry Kim and tell him he must shut down Hawaii County except for essential services and workers. This includes closing County Parks. Contrary to the Governor's recommendations (and CDCs), he is letting businesses and individuals make decisions for themselves. This is NOT appropriate given the seriousness of the Covid-19 pandemic. Taking a firm clear stand is his duty - his responsibility. It's about SAVING LIVES. We do need/want essential services including restaurants doing take-outs only, grocery stores remaining open (with Kupuna Hours), utilities, and of course our healthcare providers. And we are sincerely grateful and thank these individuals for their dedication and persistence.
Please read story below about what Mayor Kawakami of Kauai is mandating. It's the right thing to stop or minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Our Hawaii County also needs to step up support/outreach information to kupuna via the Office of Aging – they are not getting info they need to protect themselves, to understand how to prevent the spread.
Please, after reaching the Mayor, or his staff, please call your County Council representative and let him/her know you’ve called the Mayor and how urgently you feel about this.
Please be respectful but firm. If you are unable to speak to the Mayor or council member, get the name of whomever it is that you speak with and their title and make sure they get your name and contact info (phone or email).
Mayor's Office: 961-8211 is main number.
You might also consider posting your thoughts to social media - again, please remain thoughtful and respectful.
Thank you and please stay safe.
