East Hawaii Farm to Car
#1
I received this email today:

We are excited to announce the launch of the East Hawaiʻi Farm to Car, a new initiative of the Hilo County Farm Bureau in collaboration with local farmers affected by the market impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Farm-to-Car program will establish an aggregation and distribution hub as a direct-to-consumer sales channel to provide healthy, fresh food and other agricultural products to the community through online ordering and a safe drive-thru pick-up location.

I really like the concept.
I dislike that pricing, after eliminating the middlemen and the store markup, is higher than if one were to buy from the store in the first place?

I think the concept is not that they are competing with stores. I only glanced at the site and saw the 1 dozen pasture raised eggs for $9.00 and thought, geeze that's about $4.00 more than other local eggs, which they themselves are already more expensive than mainland eggs.

But on the other hand, they are probably the only ones who even sell legal local eggs, and also the only ones selling pasture raised eggs. (local $5.00 dozen "hatching" eggs are supplemented with commercial layer hen feed). I couldn't imagine the labor involved in REAL pasture raised eggs, not to mention all the costs of dealing with the regulations, so the fact that they can keep them under $10/dozen seems like a major accomplishment.
