Catchment tank liner
#1
After getting water last Monday, the tank is almost empty. There must be a leak in the liner. Anyone have an idea of how much the cost of a new liner will be? Thank you in advance for any help/advice anyone has.

Liners can be patched or repaired, so it may not need to be replaced. I would recommend contacting somebody who can do both:

The leak in your tank must be small if you can't easily see it. It should be close to where the level of your tank drained. Have food coloring ( found in any store with baking supplies - supermarkets, Target, Walmart ) close by when you get a bit of rain, and put some at each quarter round of your tank. The leak will draw the coloring, and make it fairly easy to see where the hole is. Liner patches were available at Ace Hardware last time I needed one - granted it was about 6 years ago, but it has held with no problems.

Forgot to add, that once you find where the leak was, check to make sure the foundation for your tank was not eroded by the water outflow.

We recently got a small leak in our liner. The tank was installed in 1996, and had a lot of rust. I knew we would be needing a new tank eventually. I called John Able in HPP. He replaced the whole tank, liner, and cover. His helper couldn't work, so I assisted him. It ran us $4800. It took a couple of days, and he brought a small (maybe 300 gallon?) tank, and filled it with water, and lumbering so we could have running water overnight. This was a nice touch. We went to a slightly smaller tank. From a 24 foot diameter to a 21 foot. We have never, in 9 years, ever run low on water. When I saw the old are tank after we removed the liner,  was glad we went with a newtank. Lots of rust!

That's the biggest tank I've heard of.  Height?  Must be over 10,000 gallons.

Got a quote from Water Works in Hilo. It was about $5800. Our tank is about four feet high. Same height as the old one, but smaller diameter. Had to cut the cover supports all shorter to work. Those supports were pretty new.

Oh, it's a shorty at 4 feet high.  That makes it 10,000 gallons then.
