moving from idaho to hawaii
#1
Hi all first of all thank you to all. I have had great success on puna web their is great sence of community, that I want to be apart of.
Wondering which moving company to go with, Ive had alot of companies say they cant get a pod or shipping container to Idaho, Wondering if my best bet is to pack everything up and put into a u-haul to move everything to the west coast and get a shipping container from their.
who has moved from the mid-west? which moving company did you use? and what were the costs?

I only moved from California so it was easier, but even with that, the $7000 I spend was not well spent. I found that I could live without nearly all the stuff I brought. With internet access to find virtually anything again if it is really needed, starting over with all new everything would have been a better choice for us. Not everyone will agree but think carefully about what you really need. Consider putting things in storage for a year and see how much you really want them if you just can't part with them.

Good luck and see you when you get here!

Hey LostBoysToy, we moved from Minnesota to here via United VanLines. They moved our things from MN to CA and floated it across the barge, then Hawaiian Movers brought our stuff to the house. But then again, we sold everything before moving here so our cost was fairly inexpensive. You just have to weigh the benefit of bringing things here and paying the cost, or selling everything and recouping once you get here. Anyways, hopes that helps. Aloha!!

have you tried calling matson and letting them arrange getting their container to your place. i did this from the midwest and it was easy they arranged the trucking, the trains, the trucks to the docks in oakland and then across.

I moved from pocatello a year ago. We used west point relocation. They were great. They brought a container right down our road, gave us a couple hours to load it. They took it from there and we had it in Hawaii a couple weeks later. The only thing is you need to plan ahead to use some sort of ramp because they dont bring any to load with the container.

We got a 20 foot container. It was preety high off the ground, about 8 ft. (From memory, others can probablly give you an exact number). Total cost to Nanawale, which is pretty deep in Puna, was 5800 dollars. I would definitely do it again. It was worth the money having all our stuff. I priced driving a Uhaul to my dads house in the bay area and loading the container there, but it would have costed more and been much more of a headache. The container was on the abck of a truck. To actually get it off, you will pay a huge amount of money in the middle of Idaho (get the correct machinery to your house, extra time, etc., which all costs a ton of money). I got a ramp from the local uhaul. It was a bit dangerous, but if you have help you can get it done. Hope that helps.

Also check how close to a train terminal you are... When we were moving from Chicago there was a few thousand dollar difference between having a container loaded onto a freight train at a freight yard nearby or having it freight truck shipped....

That said, we were not positive what/where this chapter of our life was going, and we had nothing irreplaceable that we wanted to move (and antiques that went to others, as we realized we wanted to invest less time in stuff we really didn't use....)
We shipped all of our stuff using the post office & 81 boxes.... most of them were large double walled computer CRT monitor boxes....

Oh, and yesterday on Hawaii craigslist there was a salon setup for $150, located in Keaau....don't know the quality or condition, just know I was looking for something completely different when it came into my search.... maybe it was a sign??? (Not for me, but for you...)

WOW Carey
in the the last few weeks there have been all kinds of signs. popping up for us, for example there is a house on the m.l.s that has been on all winter, but the other day when I was going through the pictures of this house and in the living room was the same 3 foot by 4 foot picture of a bird of paradise that I have had for 10 years.
so thank you Carey, my partner is now a believer in the signs. It has been a trip to say the least, all positive and for the good.
it has reinforced my faith as well.
Wish there was a train close by but we are 150 miles from the nearest city,
here is another sign .
I was talking to a client of mine the other day. And was talking to her about Hawaii, she told me she knew a wonderful real estate agent on Hawaii. (now keep in mind we live in a town of 3000) Imagine my surprise when she mentioned the name John Dirago (hope I didnt slaughter the spelling of your last name John. Well Ive been Talking to john about property for about 6 months now. (What a small world).
