I'm making a trip to the island in August and I would like to narrow down the areas to visit. I was curious to see where you guys go for businesses/health care. My first assumption is Hilo, but what about Pahoa or Kea'au?
Naturally I'm curious because I'll be starting my practice out there at the beginning of next year and I would like to find a better niche for the people in Puna rather than just forming ranks with other docs in Hilo. Any suggestions welcomed!

Dr J, don't know what you practice, if it is hospital based, Hilo is the closest (the Shipman/Puna plan does have a hospital in the WAYYY future)

What exactly do you practice? All the specialists are in Hilo, partly because of needing quick access to the hospital for surgeries etc. That includes the paediatricians, who do the newborn nursery rounds in the early morning.
If you are into family practice/ general physician and want to be out of town, I would recommend you look at Keaau including the newly developing Ulupono town center. I know there is a big need all over Puna, but the advantage of being in Keaau is that you can catch all the Hilo commuters that live Volcano-way as well as Pahoa-way on their way to and from home. And it's only 20 minutes to HMC if you need access to the hospital.

Sorry. I guess that bit of information would be important! I'm a chiropractor. Thanks for the info on the medical clinic and hospital. I'm looking forward to working with all health care professionals once on the island.
