Kea'au Pahoa Road Improvements Advisory Task Force
#1
I recently received a letter from the Hawaii DOT regarding the creation of a "Keaau-Pahoa Road Improvements Task Force." Their web site is www.keaau-pahoa.com

The letter was sent to me as a bed and breakfast owner. I do not know how widely it was sent out. They are seeking members to be on the advisory task force but my impression is that they have already decided on four lanes although their web site does include roundabout information. Among other things the web site says:

"The planning portion of this project is anticipated to be completed in 2009. The resulting study will involve an alternatives analysis, public involvement program and the preparation of environmental documents. The project design stage should be completed by 2012 and the construction of an improved highway should be completed by 2017."

I saw no mention of the Puna plan.

I am considering applying for this, but not if it seems to be a total waste of time. Rob, would this be worth my (or anyone's) time?

It would be a good position to participate from for a couple reasons.

Puna needs people "in the loop" to advocate our POV and it may enable us to be better informed on the DOT process.

Ideally the person selected would be very knowledgeable on Puna treansporation issues and the proposals and alternatives discussed in the PCDP. There is a risk that the DOT is merely wanting to create the appearance of community involvement. If that is true the best way to know is by being in the middle of it.

I saw the date for applications extended to June 16th I believe. Time to research it some and think about it. I would not consider it a light committment. It is a key issue which the community has invested a lot of time.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Finally got to drive on a low spped roundabout drive just south of Ocanside Cali., it was basic 1 lane, 2 way traffic, 25mph speed. It was somewhat smoother and quicker than 4 way stops, but wouldn't work on a fairly high speed road like 130 because of all the side turn outs!

Better lower the speed limit to 50 or go 4 lane. On 130, if you removed most of the HPP turn outs, by consolidating to only 2, with all the new upper paved roads, that would help immensly, only one exit/entry on each end. After living on Oahu, you don't have a traffic problem, and the economy will soon alleviate what little there is for you! Incidentally the bus on Oahu costs 2$ per ride, and going up.
