Has anyone else noticed...?
#1
Thought I'd offer a different thread as there are a coupla things I've noticed lately and wondered if it's just me or do others see the same things happening.

1) Now that gas is a $4 a gallon reality, lots less people cruising and the pau hana rush hour traffic at Keaau Bypass is not nearly as backed up these days.

2) No slugs since the coquis arrived! I used to have to seriously poison for the slugs that covered the sidewalk that surrounds my house, something I didn't like doing, what with pets, plants, et al. But there is not a slug to be found on my property these days (and I know because I dig earthworms to feed my caged hens every day!)

Anyone else?

Yes..I've noticed it also on HWY 130. And actually gas this morning in the downtown Hilo shell station was $4.20...heading toward the big $5.00. Haven't noticed a reduction in slugs though. I still have them all over the place where I live.

How would we notice? We don't drive anywhere anymore. Wink

Remember how much of a ghost town this island was after sugar left? No cars moving around, no houses being painted or repaired, folks just kinda hunkering down and loads of folks moving to the mainland?

Someone told me yesterday that for every 40 people coming in on airplanes there are 60 leaving. Dunno if it is true or not, but does it seem like there is an exodus in progress?

As far as slugs, no, don't notice any however we don't have coqui although we do have chickens and they do real well at eating slugs. Ducks are also death on slugs if you need better slug repellent.

We don't seem to have as many centipedes either. I don't recall seeing one in the last couple of years.

Thats not fair!!! Those are one of the few of Gods creatures that FREAK me out!! Blagghh!! Although I must say that it seems like there are less centipedes here(hpp) than on Kauai- east side anyway - I have only came across two that my cats left half dead as a gift on the front step and none in the house(since we moved here in Jan), which is a first for me. Watch I just jinxed myself.

my skin is crawling.....ukh[xx(]

...

Funny I left here in 1996 and gas was about $2.25 a gallon. No traffic what so ever from Hilo to Pahoa and NO BYPASS.

12 years later... gas is $4.00 (plus) their is the Keaau Bypass and Traffic is a mess!

I guess it depends upon how long you have been away from the island.

I can't stand this traffic now... it was never like this before I left, when gas was much cheaper.

Albeit its not near as bad as Oahu traffic. [Wink]

btw- Nice to meet you at the meeting Crankie.

We get coquis, slugs, centipedes ... and the chickens eat every one of each they can get.
Wet weather, not so many centipedes, plenty slugs.
Dry weather, the other way.

On another note, has anyone else noticed the wild impatiens have disappeared in the last few years? They used to take up every spare inch on my place and my neighbors, got 5 or 6 feet tall, now all gone except for a few small red & pink. They're all gone from the "tree tunnel" on Kapoho hwy too.

I always said Hawai’i was the noisiest place I’ve ever lived but in the past couple of weeks here in upper HPP, it has quieted down considerably. At first I thought it might have something to do with school being out but then realized the boom cars of teenagers weren’t cruising en mass as in the past, the ATVs were missing, plus, for the first time in the four years I’ve been here, there are actually days when there you don’t hear the sound of bulldozers in the distance -- that hasn‘t happened before. And, one more bonus, the guy up the road who used his dump truck to run to the Wiki Wiki a couple times a day has stopped doing that. The quiet is a little unsettling after being used to the din but I betcha I can get used to it. I don’t go to town often but am going today -- will be interesting to see if I notice any difference in the traffic. Funny where you find your silver linings, isn’t it?

Has anyone tried using Diatamaeceous earth to get rid of the slugs. The particles are razor sharp and slice the slugs, killing them.
