Is there a friendly bank anywhere close to Keaau that anyone recommends? I will be working in Hilo but it would be nice to have a branch closer to home. So many details to think about!!! My husband is on disability and I need to get a bank lined up for the direct deposit of his disability check. I would like to do this ahead of time so that we can close out our account here before we go. Linda Bowman

CU Hawaii has a nice building in Keaau on HWY 130 right next to where they are going to be building the new Longs drugs retail store. Really nice and big with all services. plenty of parking, drive through and never crowded.

We bank at CU Hawaii.... but if you are coming down 11, the Keaau branch is a little (couple of blocks) out of the way...
HFS Fed. Credit Union is right on Old VOlcano in Keaau, across from the post office & the Shopping center
These are both credit unions
If you are interested in banks, I have heard a lot of good about Bank of Hawaii, but have no experience with them... there are branches all over Hilo
hope this helps...

Can you just join the credit unions or do you have to work at specific places to be able to join? That's kind of how it is here. Linda Bowman

CU Hawaii and HFS both only require that you live here.

Not even positive you have to LIVE here... we opened our CU Hawaii account the first week, without an address or lease, & on the waiting list for a PO Box.... Having a house here is more than we had when we moved... 3 years ago this week!

I like HFS a lot better than CU Hawaii in Keaau. I had to take a check in there (CU HAWAII) and there was no one to help me when I had a question. Also the fact that there are 3 in my world and 1 in waimea and a few in kona is nice.
Two weeks ago, I forgot my wallet and ATM card/cash/visa at home in Kapoho. I walked into HFS and said I need a big favor - I told the teller the story - and she said no problem, Mrs Dumond, how much do you need? I had not prefaced the conversation with her with my name. She remembered it and saved me from a wasted hr or more! She did not hassle me at all. I was completely surprised as once before that happened at bank in Hilo that I had banked at for more than 10 years - and they wouldn't even pull my signature card to do it.
I dont need much from a financial institution - I put money in, I take money out. But once in awhile it sure is nice to know that they know who you are. (so think about that BOH! Oopps ! Did I say their name?)

"What's a good bank?"
-- an oxymoron.
