Perhaps there is a link somewhere for the clubs. I have joined the Orchid Society and plan on joining two women's groups, Soroptimist perhaps and one other. The link for the orchid society is

Hey HADave! There are a couple that are near and dear to my heart. If you are a retired airline employee there's the Pau Hana Kapuna group (UAL affiliate but they allow stepchildren from other airlines ha-ha). We get together once a month for lunch either on the east or west side of the island and talk story. It really is a lot of fun. The other group I like isthe Na Hoa Holomoku Yacht Club (don't bust out the deck shoes,it isn't like that). We also meet once a month for a pot luck (ono grinds braddah!) and sail on Hilo Bay the following Sunday. Both clubs are listed in the paper w/ meet times, phone contacts, etc. So get outta the cold and come join the fun!!! pj

Here in Kwaj Carol and I belong to: Kwajalein Yacht Club, Kwajalein Scuba Club, Ham Radio Club, and are active in the local Protestant church. Carol goes swimming with a group of women 4 times a week and I play keyboard at church and at the Java Cafe coffee shop and sing in a great Acapella group. We like fun biking and playing weird board games. Think we can find anything that fits in with our tastes in Puna?

Hey Jim and Carol welcome and wow things are progressing quickly for the two of you. Congratulations new Punatics!! There is the First United Protestant Church in Hilo, Reverend Larry Walter. PJ and I were at a service there in February. The service was a little to subdued for PJ but I felt so happy there!!! LOL!! Any way Debbie and Larry Walter are swell people, the service is all inclusive, and the children's sermon was the most precious I have ever experienced. The children are sung to as they come forward to the children's sermon, and they are sung to as they traipsed off to their Sunday school class. The services are ended with a prayer and a song in Hawaiian! Hope you get a chance to experience these services.
Aloha, Mella L
PS my husband Gene is a Ham, but that is another story!! LOL

I found this previous post I saved for Gene and thought it might be something Jim might be interested in;
The Big Island Amateur Radio Club meets for lunch at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, Fridays 11, am . Also a meeting second saturday of the month at 2PM, Keaau Community Center, behind the fire station on Old Volcano Road. Talk in 146.88.
There is also an active daily Hawaiian net on 40 LSB at 3PM. I'll try to get the freq for you.
There is also a gathering of Kona side hams monthly and I'll try to find the time/QTH. The QCWA also meets monthly in Hilo. 73 W6SL

MELLA - Thanks for the Ham radio info. We'll be sure and check it out when we arrive. When we were in Hilo I visited the group that meets every morning for coffee at the "Jack In The Box" near Prince Kuhio Plaza. Some of them were from the Puna area.

Cathie and I went down today. It was a very beautiful display of Orchid. There was also a display of island tolerant Rhododendrons there also. They were gorgeous and bloom all year. I took a lot of photos and if they turn out I'll post them for all to enjoy.
