Saturday Veterinary Emergency
#1
We have a very sick dog, and our vets, Aloha Veterinary Center, are closed for the weekend. Their phone message says there is no one on call this weekend and that they are "sorry for the inconvenience." We are upset about this and plan to give them a piece of our mind on Monday, but in the meantime, does anybody know a vet who will take non-customers on Saturday? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not at all cheerful today,
Jerry

Try the East Hawaii Veterinary Hopital or Center....can't remember the exact name. I know they are open on Saturday until 4pm. We know of another emergency they handled....and we were very impressed.

They are in Hilo....in that strip mall between KFC and Macy's.

Good luck.

Try Dr. Mina's office next to kuhuio grill. I think this is the number 959-2273 I know he is open today.

Thank you Loretta and dcl. Both your suggestions are East Hawaii Vet, and we have called them. They told us they are swamped with customers of Aloha Vet and won't know if they can see him until noon. So if anyone has any other suggestions, we would appreciate it. We have called several places in the yellow pages with no results.

Thanks,
Jerry

I feel really bad for you, sometimes it seems like sickness always shows up on the weekend (pet or human).

I like the East Hawai'i people a lot, too bad they were swamped.
My vet is Boyd Castro at Hilo Veterinary and I really like him. They are closed Sunday for sure though. They are also pretty busy and might be less inclined to take an emergency when they're booked solid if the pet isn't already a client. Might. They aren't really an emergency clinic.

If you ever are motivated to travel far, the North Kohala vet --Kohala Pet Clinic-- is a really good guy. Stan Levine. I lived up there in 2005 and was sorry to move my cats away from his care -- but was lucky to find Boyd Castro.

The only reason I'm mentioning other vets is it sounds like you are pretty fed up with Aloha and might be looking elsewhere.

Hope you were able to get in somewhere. Have you tried Dr. Sterret Grune @ Big Island Vet in Paradise Park? His phone: 966-5402. Or Dr. Seeske Versluys @ Kilauea Vet Services in Keaau? Her info is: 966-8582. Both are amazing emergency vets, and have come through for me in times of crisis.

Update:
Makai, the dog, is doing somewhat better today thanks to a neighbor who offered some herbal remedy and the chicken soup Bear made. We were not able to get him in to see a vet anywhere yesterday, and we called them all. We were repeatedly told that due to the Aloha Veterinary having made no on-call arrangements whatsoever for the weekend, they were already swamped beyond any help with Aloha customers. This is upsetting because Aloha has several doctors.

At any rate, I want to thank everyone who posted here and also those who sent private emails of encouragement. It means a lot to us. We will be shopping for a new vet tomorrow, and the suggestions we have received will be considered. Drs. Grune and Versluys have received more than one recommendation each, so they appear most likely.

Again, thanks to all who tried to help with suggestions or offered good wishes,
Jerry and Bear

Glad to hear that things are looking up and that your four-legged friend is getting well.

Also glad to hear you are looking for a new vet. I have been told that Dr. Grune no longer takes any emergencies. He is a very nice vet...but if you chose him you might want to have a back-up. That is what we have done....just in case.

Resolved: The Island needs and emergency vet. Believe me, I talk to everyone involved in animal care over here and I tell them about this wondrous volcanic island.....so scary when our furry friends are in pain or discomfort. Nothing is more heartwrenching.
