Carrie,

I don't know what is available there, as we are not going to be on the island for ten days yet. BUT I have a friend who told me that there is an area in Hilo that has a hispanic population where the stores carry a lot of things not found on other parts of the island. Here in the (SF Bay area) you can buy the dried hibiscus blossoms and you make tea with them. I am sure you could dry your own. They usually use a red hibiscus, and it tints the tea a very pretty color. I have also had mixed drinks with this tea, orange juice and tequilla.

OK...now... spill the beans... who is Carlos at Maku'u??? Is there a Mexican restaurant I don't know about? Or are you talking about the Maku'u Farmer's Market? Sorry, I am trying to stay on top of things and food is one of them!

Carlos sells tamales, bean, rice and a greeaaat red salsa that he and his wife make. My husband is Mex-Amer and grew up in Arizona...the best tamales we've found here so far are his...and now his yummy hibiscus tea. Three tamales for $5.00 - yum.[Wink]

Oh yah - it's at the Maku'u Market...every Sunday!

Carrie, I got a Purple leaf Hibiscus as a trade for some other plants. It is still little, but the leaves are used in salads & teas, kinda tart lemony flavor.

If I even get it into the ground & it gets big enough, I will try to get some cuttings (or get a little plant from the people) for you.

Thanks for the heads up Carrie! I make tamales but I love to try other people's too. There are hundreds of varieties from all over Latin America. Many are made with banana leaves instead of corn husks. Some like Cuban tamales have fresh corn mixed in with the meat and others have a masa wrapped around a filling.

It is always great to know about the vendors at the market. We have to make a trip down there for a machete on the 2nd, we will check out the tamale man!

I am bringing some of the Mexican dried hibiscus flowers for tea when we move if you want I would be glad to share some with you.

We grow Red Zinger Hibiscus in Hawaiian Acres and it is sure prolific. It has seeded itself on a hillside and the mother plant is about 10' by 10' now. We use the flowers for tea and the leaves in salads for color and flavor. We use the flowers and peppermint for tea most of the time. I found the plant at the market in Hilo several years ago and have been enjoying it ever since.
