Finally got UV Light system hooked up, but...
#1
I waited two weeks to get this hooked up so my kids and I could drink "tap" water and occasionally shower water too. I figured between UV and these huge filters that the funky water smell would go away. But my water still smells like gym socks??? It appears crystal clear just has this funky odor to it? Anybody have an idea what to do or what causes it?

When we first installed our UV system the water smelled like the cpvc glue. Yuck!
I let the water run for a while and it went away.
If your water smells bad in the same way it did pre-UV, I'm not sure.
Have you checked in your tank to make sure there's nothing dead or growing in there?

In addition to inspecting the interior of the tank, ensure that you're adding chlorine bleach to the tank regularly.

Patricia Macomber's catchment guidelines is a good publication to read through for troubleshooting tips. It also includes info on disinfection. You can find the document online at: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/RM-12.pdf

After disinfecting the tank, you may also want to shock your lines by adding bleach to your canister filter, running water through the taps until you smell the chlorine, close the taps (do this one at a time), let the system sit for 30 minutes, then run open all the taps until you no longer smell the chlorine.

If you have a standard water heater tank, you'll want to drain it first before doing the procedure.

These actions should eliminate any microbes in the system and help. Contact your UV system distributor for specific instructions.

I had to perform a similar task to shock a well in HPP and solved a similar problem.

Try replacing the cartridge in one of your filters (the second one the water gets to) with a carbon filter.

my catchment tank is less than 6 weeks old! At what time should we start to ad bleach into it? I suspect it's not to nasty yet? But my roof is getting it's fair share of debris(tree leaves) from Albeiza Trees surrounding my house..

It sounds like your tank was recently built and at least partly filled by tanker truck? We've found that when we get that half to three quarter tank load of water, it has a bad taste until the rainwater has a chance to dilute it.

Have you looked in your tank to see if you already have debris or algae growth? Have you had your water tested to see how your treatment is working?

I believe that you have a two filter system with UV treatment after that. If you got your setup from Hawaii Catchment, chances are that you have a 20 micron sediment filter followed by a 5 micron combo (fiber/carbon block). The 5 micron filter should be enough to cleanup the taste. Ask the people at Hawaii Catchment.

Les, today is my third day with my UV setup. It appears that the filters have done their job. I barely smell anything and water is crystal clear!

Yes, my UV setup with two filters is from Hawaii Catchment Co.. They also built my new catchment and yes gave me 1/2 tank of water too. Tank is full now, so I'm sure that helped in getting rid of this extremely nasty smell.

I wish I had known about the 'First Wash', when I had these guys build my catchment. I would have asked them to install it for me. I'm worried about constant debris falling onto my roof from surrounding Albeiza trees. So having friend cut back trees is next project, and building a kennel for dog[s] at night not to far behind..
