Does anyone know if Hawaii County allows vanishing edge pools(aka "infinity pools)to be built on the Big Island.
Here are examples:

What we have in mind is a smaller one. Given the high cost of excavating lava, an above ground pool makes sense. However, most of the above ground pools I have seen look really cheap.
Thanks!

Hi,
They are allowed, based on some that I've seen on the Kona side. They are generally found in higher end homes and also at resorts. The Fairway Villas at the Waikoloa Beach resort has one.
It's especially beautiful if you have an unobstructed ocean view beyond.
They are definitely not cheap to create.

Above lava pools can be really nice, especially when they are made to look as if they are below lava level. It's the surround that makes the difference.

The vanishing edge isnt a problem but you still have to have an encloser around the pool , it can be down slope out of site but you need a fence
The devil is in the detail

Horizon House B&B over toward Kona has a really nice infinity pool. A good photo shows it well at their website (scroll down to page bottom), if you can cope with seeing some guy's butt-cheeks in the photo as well.

This is a great place to recommend for guests who are headed around the island to stay at while near Kona, BTW; very elegant, friendly, and with leisurely gourmet breakfasts of excellent quality.
There is a gate down on the highway way below; perhaps the property is fenced all the way around but I did not notice that. No fence near the pool or house.

Beautiful! (The pool, not the butt cheeks.)
