This is new - or maybe not?:
A set of plans we sent in recently was return by plan check because the architect's stamp said: "Registered Architect" (as it has for the past fifteen years) which was always previously acceptable.
The plan checker returned the plans saying that he was recently informed that the stamp must read "Licensed Architect" instead.
Needless to say this is going to cause some delay for at least one client as new stamps are ordered.
IF anyone is prepared to submit you might want to look at your stamps.

Anybody know the details of the differences between a "licensed" and "registered" architect? Can you even be registered without being licensed?

I am at a loss to explain the inspiration for it. The architect I am working with has used the "registered" format since he was instructed to by the State of Hawaii years ago. Apparently the DCCA decided it was important to change the language to "licensed" and didn't bother to tell the architects.
So some clients lose a couple weeks of filing time over a word.
Go figure.

Speaking of architect stamps, is it customary or required or negotiable or necessary to have two stamps if a home and garage are not attached? For example if the house and garage are attached, one stamp is required and if detached two stamps are required?

Two building permits are required if detached. The two structures can be on the same set of plans (with one stamp).

Of course, just had to run around the office (Oahu) checking stamps- both the civils and the architects have "Licensed" on them...

Do you know the name of that plan checker? Here in Hilo, last I knew, there were 2 checkers with one that was taking on more and more of the bulk. Sometimes it is beneficial to run it through the other checker. It makes very little sense as the same policies *should* apply, however... that isn't always the case for some reason.

Rob - did you check with Nani or Kathy and see if it could be "corrected" before it came back full circle from DOH?

I put a call into Nani a few days ago but, unusually, I haven't heard back yet, Perhaps she is on vacation. It is becoming moot now as my architect has had a new stamp made and we will be back in the saddle (I guess).
