We are now the proud owners of 8 female hair-sheep (no wool), plus two kids that are nursing and four males that will be butchered next week.

If anyone wants mutton, contact me..... wooo hoooo, gotta love this green living! Pam

Mutton is good, is this on the hoof or in neat paper parcels? How old are the males and who is going to be doing the butchering?

It's already done; neighbor is a butcher. I have the first batch in the pot boiling for stew; will let you know how it turns out.

The stew was a raving success. Flavor is very mild. Family noshed on it for two days

The sheep were between 14 and 18 months old. Just right for butchering mutton (lamb is 12 months and under). They were very lean and there was little waste.

The meat is all wraped in butcher paper but not marked... eeek... so I have to guess what is in each one.... chops, ribs or stew meat! I might have a leg or two in there.... don't really know. It's fun though. We filled the stew with green and yellow wax beans from our garden along with the usual potato, carrots, onion and barley. Yummy!

The rest of the sheep are most happy in their new pasture and house. We got the sides all up nicely and straw on the floor... a nice mineral lick in it all.

Mostly the animals like to sleep in the shade of the forest area... and they lay and munch in the grass of the pasture during the day. I am guessing that they won't sleep in the shelter unless it rains, and it has been dry so far.

Oh, wait, this is Glenwood aka Gloomwood where it only rains.. don't break the myth!
