Hello,
There is a really big albizia tree next to my house that I need cut down.
I was wondering what the best option is to cut it down. I was thinking of tying the trunk with rope and using the winch on my truck to pull tension, then cutting it down.
Anyone know of an affordable guy who can cut this thing down?

I'm sorry, my guess is the tree is about 60' tall, and the trunk is about 2-3' in diameter.

Stan, if you have never cut an albizia this big, make sure to have a video camera running.... These are heavy trees. Just think, would you even think of trying to load all of the tree in your truck....probably you will know that the tree weight is way over the truck rated weight.... same is most likely true for the winch rating, the rope, the cable & the area of the truck the winch is mounted to.... Tree felling with trucks has made for some classic video comedy...but do you want your truck involved? People have done it successfully, but if the tree takes a wicked turn, it could eliminate your truck...or worse, a chunk of the house.
I have noticed that Asplundh Tree trucks are in HPP on Makuu. This company is noted in the midwest for their tree service (They are the guys the power company uses in the Chicago area). They have the big reach trucks that are needed to get up into a tree safely....don't know the cost (The Chicago based guys took down a huge forked oak in our yard that was split in a tornado & hung up in two other trees & over our neighbors house, saved the others & our neighbor only had a few leaves hit their roof, all good. We normally did tree felling on the old oaks at our old house, but this was one of those times when we bit the bullet & paid the money...the risk of a wrong fall was just too high...can't give you any news here, as our house here has more manageable trees, for now....

Stan, be very, very careful with this. Carey makes a lot of sense. I strongly suggest that you consult an experienced tree service for the safety of yourself and your property. Unless you are experienced with large trees, it can be very dangerous. If this thing is anywhere near your house, somebody with good insurance needs to do it. I would ask to see the policy and call the insurer to make sure it is in force and covers all possibilities of property damage or personal injury.
Cheers,
Jerry

Do you recommend anyone in particular to cut the tree down?
I wasn't planning on removing the tree. I want to keep it as backfill in my yard.
My winch in my truck is rated to 12,000 lbs, so I don't think there is any problems with pulling force.

You should know that albizzia can spread by stem pieces taking root and by seeds. Waiwi (strawberry guava) does the same. Cutting down and burying these trees doesn't necessarily get rid of them.

Darn it! This is getting more difficult and expensive!

Stan,
I recommend you work with an experienced arborist if there is even a remote risk of property damage, traffic disruption, or injury.
I recommend Da Puna Pruna (808) 965-6464. We've used his services several times and have been happy with his work and pricing.
He does not have a chipper but can have one brought in. Chipping the logs on site can provide you with a nice mound of mulch that can eventually be used. One thing to consider is that freshly cut albizia will emit an odor that can be offensive for a few days/weeks.

Stan,
let me know if you get any quotes for cutting down your Albeizia. I'd like to get a ball park figure. I have a few that are slowly moving towards my new house.
