About 3 months ago we decide to do something about the fruit flies that had been attacking our fruit. We were steered to the FDA in Hilo. They gave use free fly bait and instructions on how to make a fly trap out of a 2 liter bottle. One bait type lasts a year, and another 8 months. It attracts the males and takes them out of service. We have trapped hundreds. It has helped with our tomatoes and our papayas. There was no cost just had to listen to a little info on it's use.

This is the CTAHR site, they probably know way more about fruit flies than we ever want to know.
At the Waimea Ag experimental station last Saturday they were giving away the plastic bottles and selling the bait packs for $2 each as a fund raiser for their program. They had a paper listing Garden Exchange as a supplier for more bait packs. Browsing through Garden Exchange next time you are in Hilo would probably be useful. Garden Exchange has stuff that works in Hawaii and not just generic mainland gardening supplies like Home DePot and Wally's World.

I went down to Garden Exchange in Hilo and they had the bait and a bottle for show and tell. 1, 2,& 4 oz of the bait. 1 OZ of the bait was $7 I think. It looks easy to do, and they say it WORKS.

We were told it would be for sale. It was Free though. It was the USDA building above the
Imiloa Astronomy center. We went there and just asked. Were directed in the building to a very nice gentlemen. It is a very nice facility. Sorry about the error of FDA

How large of a hole should you have? I was told 3/8' was to large. How I have about !/4 and I see a lot of flies on the outside.

You take a 2 liter and cut the top 1/4 off.
Set the top down on a table funnel shape up with no cap.
Then take the bottom turn it over and place the opening over the funnel part so that it funnels into the inverted bottom.. drill a small hole for a wire and bait. Hang in or near tree. The flies climb in from the bottom threw the bottle cap opening. trapped.

Thanks for the picture Mark, I had a hard time putting this together in my head. How many have you put up and how effective have they been? Have you been getting many other insects in the trap? I would hate to have honey bees lost.
