Moving this Year-Hilo Vs. Kona
#1
Hello everyone,

I am new to the website and will soon be new to your island. I visited several years ago for my honeymoon and have been thinking about you island ever since. My husband and I finally decided on making the move this year. I have been meeting wonderful people through my research that are giving lots of great information, including telling me about this website. My question is the following: I visited Maui, Oahu and Hawaii. I loved Hawaii the most especially Hilo. However, in the research I am doing in order to move and the questions I am asking I am getting information that is confusing me to no end! I purchased a relocation e-book and the information I am getting from there is basically not to even think of moving to the Hilo side of the island. To make a long story short all horrible things have been told to me by some o the people I have met about the Hilo side of the island. I was set on moving to this area and even found a good person who recommended it to me and gave this website and other websites to look for houses in Puna. What is going on with the differences between the two sides? I feel almost a sense of arrogance from those that I speak to that live on the Kona side but have also met those who claim it can be the same there or in Hilo. I loved it all and have a trip planned for Hilo soon. Can someone please tell me why all the bad (BAD)talk about he Hilo side of the island by these people I am meeting.

Lenny, I don't know what are the horrible things you heard about the Hilo side but I can tell you they most likely are not true. I live in Kona but I spend every second weekend in Puna for the past six years and I feel just as much home there as I do in Kona. The West side of the island is more "touristy" and the East side of the island is more "local" but that's about it.

Don't know about any bad stuff on the hilo side. What exactly are they saying? The only thing that would make a big difference in most peoples minds about moving to one side versus the other is money. The Kona side is more expensive. That plus the fact that all the vog from the volcano dumps on the west side of the island made me move to the hilo side and I love it here!

Aloha Lenny, sounds like you're getting info from people who are referring to Puna's past. The lawless "wild west" connotation was true in the past, I lived here in the 80's and was robbed 3 different times. It is not the same place as then, we have 24/7 law enforcement, I've lived here now about 7 years, never had any problems. Also, a lot of people on Kona side can't concieve why anyone would want to live in such a wet, rural place as east Hawaii (I can't concieve how anyone could live in a place as dry, congested and expensive as Kona myself).

Hi John,
Well unfortunately the information I have gotten so far and I quote "Hilo has most of the crime problems, lower class people (that in particular offended me when I read it because it was said with so much arrogance) live there, the better schools are in Kona, better jobs, and better reception to newcomers in Kona vs. Hilo" Like I mentioned before,I am in the process of asking all the questions I can so that I can make an educated decision. In the process of my research I have encountered all negative information about the place I long so much to live in. I want to live in Hilo, I love the rain, I love the green, I loved the people when I visited.

Hi macu22,
I responded to John and I really don't want to repeat the obvious misinformation I have been given. But they are very offensive and arrogant descriptions, or judgments as to the people that live on that side of the island. It is where I want to live and I really eel I am being misguided. Too bad I paid for that e-book and now as I kept my research going am finding out the same information on relocating and even better information than contained in the book I spent money on. I assure you that my decision will no be based on what the e-book people have told me about that side of the island.

There are a lot of people that seem to have an attitude about this side of the island. I love it here and wouldn't even consider living on the Kona side. Yes, its rainy but that makes it lush and beautiful. Sure, there's unusual "characters" here, but I appreciate them as just being unique. I'm sure this side of the island is not for everyone, but its sure right for me.

Aloha leilaniguy,

The interesting thing is that my information is coming from an e-book I purchased on relocating to Hawaii. I saw the advertisement in the magazine and proceeded to purchase it immediately. I thought I had taken the first and smartest step in preparation for move to Hawaii this year. I purchased the book last week and have been in contact with the people from the book. The information I have gotten I got from people that are living in Kona now and are selling books with "advice" on how to make the "right" decision on moving to Hawaii. I apologize for possibly sounding ignorant when posting my initial concern, but I was guided to this site by a lovely person who recommended it to me. She assured me all my concerns would be addressed by the people who participate in this site. I will put that behind me now and continue with my plans move to Hilo or Puna. I have other questions about the move that I will post. Mahalo to everyone for your gracious answers.

You found the right place to ask questions at. You will see the helpful advise you get here and that comes from mostly people who live here. I remember years years years ago I was given all the bad rap about Hilo/Puna on another forum (konaweb) I just call
"putzville" now and I sure was suprised after I started going to the East side how inaccurate they were. (Try to post "punaweb" there and see what happens.)

Lenny,
I grew up on an apple orchard and then got a B.S. from the U Wash. and a Ph. D. from U Calif @Davis, and am now a geneticist with USDA in Louisiana. So I can hang with the farmers and the scientists. We bought a house in HPP (between Keaau(sp?) and Pahoa) in 1990 for eventual retirement. I have friends who are scientists in Hilo, farmers, local professionals and tradespeople and 'just' locals. I have never had any problems and have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the people I have met over the last 16 years. I think it depends a lot more on your attitude than theirs!! If you are interested in fitting in and not 'converting' anyone, you should have no trouble Hiloside or Konaside.
