Rite of passage Puna-style
#1
I've been living here full-time for only 6 weeks, but now I know I am officially here! I killed my first centipede today. Only 2-3 inches long, but still pretty creepy (no pun intended). It crawled out from under some old yard waste I was moving. Fortunately I was wearing plastic garden gloves so it could not bite me when I pinched its head off and pinched the body a few more times. Hope that took care of it. Maybe I'll keep my hatchet on me from now on.

I usually chop them up into little bits.

I recommend getting chickens, they make quick work of those nasty creatures!

You are pretty lucky it didn't bite you through the gloves.

Just wait until you see one a foot long. I freaked out the day that my neighbor came to inform me that "our children were playing under the house with the baby rats- and look what I also found under there"! AH!!! Heat attack time.

I keep forks all over the place, even in the truck, one day not long ago, turned on the defrost and a 8 inch peed came scurrying out across dashboard.
Forks work great, can sever right behind the head or stab them mid section and stomp them to death with anything handy.
The chickens do not get them all,and lucky it did not bite you through the glove.
Always check boots n shoes as they love to crawl in and hang out.
Once i had a 10 inch peed crawl across keyboard of an old PC in the office. In Waikaloa they have nasty scorpions and they are EVERYWHERE
Welcome to Big Island.

Rats!

about this time of year they seem to come out - never see them - except for the other night - one ate his (her) way through the aluminum screen - and got my left over bag of chips on the coffee table and left me a few pellets.....arrgh!

never seen em eat through aluminum 'cept in april on the BI no live traps for that bugger......

The little centipedes have a nastier bite. But the big ones are creepier/cooler, depending on your perspective. The big boys look like alien monsters and seem to swagger when they walk. And you want a shovel to chop them up.
life is short. enjoy it

we do get a rat or two - and when they give birth at the end of this month Im expecting a mass migration across my yard - last year they were looking right into my window from the couch on the lanai...as long as they dont come in - its their island too...grin

'pedes - in 7 years on this property at about 1400 ft altitude - I have yet to see one - zilch, none...not even under dead wood or wet cardboard

In my other place I had a six foot rattler under the coleman chest I set out for a few days....ah nature

I'll take the rats and feral cats any day

A Ratzapper works well. Nightvision goggles and an air gun for the well off. A cat may be best. I've seen only one centipede in coming up on 3 years of living in HPP, and I killed that one. It was outside.
