Unusual helicopter over Kapoho today
#1
I noticed a helicopter sweeping over Kapoho around 2pm today. I have never seen that type before. Sweeping low like the marijuana guys do. No markings that I saw, looked military.

Friday I saw a Blackhawk out in the same area as I was coming back from Pohoiki around 11am, flying much higher though and out towards the ocean more.

Anyone hear why so much activity? A few weeks ago in Hpp, coming from Hilo out towards Pahoa, we saw a very unusual helicopter with wings and a very large black dome that looked like some store surveillance cameras do. It was on the right wing.

I have not been able to identify two of the three that I have seen. 1 obviously a Blackhawk. Living here on this rock you see lots of heli's. These two were different.

No drugs were involved during any of these sightings. All during the day. I am sure others in Kapoho saw the two Friday and today.

Someday, take a drive into Hilo and park near the old airport control tower just past Hawaiian Airlines Cargo. Set up a lawn chair under one of the big mango trees nearby, and face the airport runways. You should have a good view of the jet passenger runway, the civilian runway for Cessna type prop planes, and both tourist helicopter and military helicopter landing and takeoff areas. You will see more military planes, helicopters, and support vehicles than you ever realized existed on this island. Sometimes, they take off and fly 25 miles south over Kapoho.

I grew up down in Keaukaha on the backside of the runway. We all see what flies over our heads out here. Every time green harvest makes their rounds, we know who they are and why.

When two military style helicopters are flying low over residential areas making sweeps, one with wings and equipment on it, we should know what is going on.

And since one of my family members is not working up at the base for the next two weeks because there is no training going on, I am wondering who these guys are simply because I have never seen this type of aircraft flying here.

You don't do sweeps that low over residential unless you are looking for something, and I think we are all familiar with the search heli's that are used here regularly.

There was a notice in the Trib last Sunday that Helco would be doing line inspections.

I guess that it could be a cover story for an alien invasion though.

Helco performs line inspections once a month. Flying a helicopter is a lot more efficient and practical way in which to inspect lines that go through jungle and other rough terrain.

As to the military ones, Hereonetheprimaledge is correct in stating that there are a lot more military flights coming and going than most people realize. I have seen as many as 10 at once, in the training area alone - all airborne.

Here is a link that has pictures of all of the current US military aircraft:

Maybe the one with wings was a AH-1Z Viper? I doubt is was an Osprey as they are quite large and not easily mistaken for a helicopter.

There used to be announcements when HELCO needed to do extensive line inspections. This is the notice in 2011:

There is quite a bit of military traffic in and out of Hilo. Most people downtown don't pay any attention to it at all. The National Guard has an old P-3 that can be very loud. Pohakuloa has several helicopters and seem to bring out their ancient Kiowas every once in awhile. The Army range also has developmental projects go through there, maybe something similar to this:

That has got to be one of the wisest things I've ever seen posted to Punaweb. It is definitely in my personal top 5.

No.

Public has the responsibility to fund the helicopters with their tax money.

Military has the right to fly as they see fit.

Anything less is a victory for Terrorism.
