Man's best friend
#1
Get a dog and spend some time training it. Simply the best protection there is. I have been stolen from in the past, but no more. It took me around eight months to train my dog and it was time well spent. The dog is a mixed breed, muscular, deep bark, with a wonderful growl. He has never been on a chain nor do I walk him on a leash, very [important]. He has only left the property when in my Auto, also very [important]. I have no fences or walls to lock him in and he runs free on my property 24 hours a day. He will bark at anyone that walks by my home but he will not leave the property. If anyone tries to come on my property he will stand in your face and bark and growl until I come and relieve him of his duty. Not one person has gotten by him yet and I have asked friends to try when I was not home. No person will ever trespass when they see a barking dog who is not on a chain, trust me on this.

Buy a dog, train him, love him, but most of all praise him, every time that he dose his job. This will give you the piece of mind that we all want.

That sounds great. What, if any, methods did you use when training him. Cause that is exactly what i am looking for.

What if your dog scares friends away? Does he know difference from friend or foe? Funny I have friends in same situation, their dogs seem to know the difference between friendly visitors & not. Can a dog be trained to recognize guests without scaring them off? What about the possible liabillity of your dog attacking someone?

Damon my EFFING dog will keep your EFFING ass off my EFFING property until I tell him that you are one of the good guys. What more do you want from a EFFING dog?

No, he is trained to be suspect of everyone until commanded to do otherwise. He is only a dog.

It’s not that hard but it takes some time. It takes a little hardware too. What I used was a electronic collar [battery operated] with senders that will give the dog a small shock when he passed the property line. I positioned the sensors across the driveways so if he left the property he would receive a jolt and send him back into the yard. After a few dozen jolts the dog gets the idea that it is much better to be on the property then off

Tom, were you able to train your dog not to eat anything given to him by strangers? If so, how did you train him?

I ask this because I just learned that my neighbor's dog was poisoned.

Tom you did it right,
To the concern to keep your dog from eating things that someone might give him/or her. is to never feed you dog human food. NEVER!

Ive said it in the past that I was planning on getting a good pig hunting dog that can take down a 200 pound pig, if it can do that it will take down a 200 pound person that tries to enter the property.

as far as training for friends or foe, their is no difference until you give the command for the dog to stop, which requires vocal control over your animal. that is a must, I don't know if they offer the training on the Island, but state side their are class's available, which is essentially the same class the police use for their dogs it costs about 750 dollars but it is well worth it, you teach your dog command words in a language only you and your dog understand, most class's teach them in German, but I think it best to have your own language that nobody can figure out.

Damon, I think most if your problems with dogs running a muck, are not from transplants, but from locals, Those of us that spend thousands to get our dogs over are not about to let our dogs run loose. My dogs just for the permits was 990 dollars another 390 in favo tests and another 1800 dollars for airfare.
my dogs are my children, which is funny since it is easier to get children to the island than a dog. So please take in consideration for those of us bringing our animals over that we are not responsible, I f we are willing to spend that kind of money to get their animals their, are not going to take the chance of our animals getting eaten by pigs, run over by cars, or being poisoned, by people like yourself.

Why are you coming down so hard on Damon? Improperly controlled dogs threatening people are a major problem here. You guys are quite outspoken about how your dogs will protect your property while you aren't there. That is fine, as long as you do control your EFFING dogs. Sounds like you will, but this is not an issue to be dismissive about.
