i'm new to this forum, just moved to orchidland from denver, colorado. my question is: where do you go to find jobs around here? i've been on craigslist--it's mostly dead with a few scams thrown in. been to the 808 classifieds, not much there. the tribune has a few postings, not much though. and i've been relentlessly dropping off resumes at places i'd like to work with absolutely no luck. i know the economy is dropping off dramatically, but is there anywhere i'm not looking that you would recommend? i'm trying the word of mouth tactic too, just putting out there that i'm here and hard working. are there places where farmers post for harvesting help?
any info is much appreciated...

What sort of work are you looking for? That may make a difference.
Things are tight and getting tighter so most employers are not looking to expand at this moment. You may have to start some sort of a business or keep yourself employed. Can you start a yard or house cleaning service? Pet sitting? Grow vegetables and sell them at the farmer's markets? Repair small engines? Hem and alter clothes? Baby sitting? A combination of several of these? There are more ways of making money than punching a time clock, figure out what you are good at producing or a service you can provide that other folks are willing to pay for and start working on doing that. It is kinda scary at first, if you are used to being on someone else's time clock, but it is very liberating to know you can take care of yourself without an employer, too, so it is worth it eventually.
The biggest self employment hurdle is health care, but a lot of doctors will take cash instead of insurance. That will cover medical maintenance but it still doesn't cover catastrophic health issues. Be very proactive about staying healthy until you have had enough time to work your business up to making enough money for a health insurance premium.
Also do whatever you can to lower your monthly expenses. Money not spent doesn't have to be earned.

thank you, everyone! the uh-hilo career center is a great resource i didn't know about. lots of jobs listed, i'll be excited to see what responses i get. starting my own small business has been on my mind, seems like there's alot of petsitters/housesitters around though. wouldn't hurt to put out some flyers and see what happens. i've also thought of opening a bar. this has always been a desire of mine which would put to good use all those years of working in one. if i can't find work, i guess i'll have to go for it and create work for myself (and possibly others). delia, i'm interested in your company, would love to know more about what the work entails. i'm a pretty good salesperson.
as far as money not spent--i'm currently doing worktrade for my housing, so that's covered. also, i'm not opposed to living in tent or vehicle, i did that on the mainland before i came here.
i know it's not easy to make a living here, and i thank you for all your help!

hirenethawaii.com is the state job board for unemployment recipients or anyone else. Check it daily. You have to register. They pull ads from pretty much every source. I also check simplyhired.com

After 3 months of looking with 15 years experience and a masters degree in health/social services, the only job offer and interview I got was holiday retail work for $8.50 an hour. It is pretty bad out there. Good luck! the key to craigslist is to look for ones that say a city name or area like Puna, the ones that say Big Island are almost always spam.
