Watergardens- Putting Greens-Business?
#1
We currently live in Texas and would like to bring our business to Hawaii. We are planning to move around Jan. We have a Lawn Maintenance/Landscaping Business, and we also install Watergardens and Putting Greens. What do ya'll feel is the market for this on the Big Island?
We are firm believers that if we want to get some where in life then we have to make it so. Working for other people just does not fly. One of us need to try to build a business that has potential of grow, if you know what I mean.
Thanks for all you help,
Billie TX

Billie, do you know you will be dealing with lava and very little soil? My husband is working for a guy that digs septics and cesspools and they use a huge jackhammer type machine to break up the lava for holes. Now maybe ponds on top of the lava or in openings in the lava. Landscaping will be really different here....have you been her before?

Putting greens in Puna????????
Not much a call for here.
You'll be able to cut grass and do some landscaping, but most folks do their own.
You will also have a lot of competition here there are a million lawn services that are established.

If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it cost when it’s free...now here come the taxes.....

Billie, competition does exist, but if you create a landscaping business that is very reliable, does quality work with competitive pricing, you likely will be able to distinguish yourself from a lot of the flock. Landscaped yards with grass are around, and who knows what the future will bring for folks interested in other landscape features (and I agree that putting greens probably wouldn't be a big hit). I'm not sure that the number of yards with landscaping would be enough to support what you're looking for, and this would deserve a lot of examination. Good luck!

Hello,
Thanks for the responses. Just as a side note, The Putting Greens are not made out of real grass. Also, we would offer the service to the whole island. We are in Texas now, and we do not have a problem driving. For us here nothing is close it seems and we live in a Big City.
We have already thought the Lava Rock out.
We would be coming in August to visit.
When it comes down to it, We would not have a problem working other islands on the bigger landscape features.
Thanks
Billie

Answer inquiries prompty, show up on time, communicate effectively, do what you say you are going to do, and charge a fair price.

You do all that, there is no competition

i want to second porks reply.. just show up and do what you say for the price you quoted and do a decent job and you will have more work then you know what to do with. i have had several koi ponds and wanted a more professional look and NO ONE on the east side had any idea what i wanted. i also see more people coming over with more money to spend. i have lived here since 1982 and have seen big changes but getting work done correctly and on time hasnt changed much... except for the wonderful sharing that happens via this forum...

Hi Billie RC,
My lawn guy in Montgomery, Texas charged $25.00 to mow, edge, blow the grass off of the driveway and weedeat around the house, fence, shed and mailbox. HERE, on the other hand, the cost just for mowing and a little weed eating is more like $75-$100 a month and the favorite item is Roundup. Seems they would rather kill it than mow it (which really bugs me!!). My yard guy said that on the Kona side (about two hours from here...see folks, in Texas we measure by the amount of time it takes to get somewhere rather than the distance) some of those people pay over a grand a month to have their very small yards kept perfect. Can you imagine! Almost makes me want to buy a lawn mower and come out of retirement!! Anyway Billie if you are even half motivated, responsible and trustworthy you will do just fine over here. Just because there isn't a putt-putt or some fascimile thereof doesn't mean it wouldn't fly. We have have all kinds of tourists now and more and more people from various parts of the world moving here all of the time so who knows what the demographic might support; you just might surprise us all and make a bona fide killin' with putting greens or whatever. Stranger things have happended! Best of luck to you both and keep us posted on what y'all decide.
Aloha,
Pam..pj

Just remember when you think it is expensive for yard maintenance, that these same people are trying to live here too and buy homes... cant buy the same house on $8/hr that you can buy in Texas. Just a thought!

On the thread - the area that REALLY could use yard service is Honomu on the Hamakua coast... having a hard time finding one for my mom. And she has a little tiny yard!

Hello Everybody,
Thanks so much for the responses. Especially the positive ones. Pam I have some family that lives in Montogomery, Tx.
We currently live in Dallas, Tx area and have been dreaming about Hawaii for about 3 years. I am hoping it will work out for us. We have 5 boys ages 11 to 9months old. I currently homeschool the children, and really want to keep doing that. We would really want to start a business there.
Thanks alot,
Billie TX
