Aloha everyone. My wife and I are moving from Kauai to Hilo in a few weeks. Was hoping that someone could give me some good spots to take our dog for swims. Not sure what the rules and regulations are on the Big Island. Whatever they are here, they are either lax or not enforced. Any dog-friendly beach suggestions (anywhere on the island) would be great. There are regularly dogs at Kehena. Best to bring them early in the morning when there are few people. Kaimu is also OK, but I wouldn't let them swim there. Officially, dogs aren't allowed on any beach here as far as I know.

That's correct, we have a "leash law" here, but I haven't seen it enforced anywhere unless there were complaints.

Kehena is a totally dog friendly beach! There are not many "legal" ones. Not sure why really. I have read that all county beaches are supposed to be off limits for dogs, but I have also seen them at all of the beaches. If a beach is patrolled you might need to keep a leash on... otherwise, come early and have fun.

Hi HiloJ. I've seen many posts already about Kehena being dog friendly which yea in a way it is. Before you go down there though are you aware of what Kehena beach is like? It would behoove you to find out first. I love it myself but many others would disagree. FWIW, I've taken my dogs there but since they are all 'mainlanders' they were scared of the rip tides and really didn't enjoy it at all. As a dog lover and trainer myself, it is a hard beach for dogs due to the rough water conditions and other loose dogs around.
