i've heard of raising Talapia, Aholehole, Mullet and Trout at home does anyone do this and what are the secrets and where do you get fish to start with?

Has anyone seen Alaskan King Crab for sale anywhere and do you remember the price per pound.

Does anyone know about raising your own shrimp and what varieties are there available.

Just in case anyone has a hankering for Maine Lobster http://www.lobsteranywhere.com

You can get great Alaskan King Crab at Costco in Kona. Also excellent Maine Lobster raised at the Natural Energy Lab outside Kona. Good price too.

Hi, HADave.

I think I saw Alaskan King crab legs in the frozen seafood section at KTA in Hilo.
I don't remember the price.

I have three friends who put in ponds on their properties, and two of them have talapia and other fish, which seem to thrive.I don't think theres much maintenance to them other than feeding.

Are they seperate ponds per species or are they social in a small pond. I presume a swimming pool or lined ground ponds are what folks use, are there filtering requirements or is just circulation and replenishment all thats needed.

i would think if left still they would make great mosquito traps.....gulp..mmmm

Thanks loffelkopffl for your input.

Robin C, Was the Crab prepacked, so many pieces per box or were they they sold individually by the pound. We've been enjoying these monster legs we've gotten at our local Super Walmart 1.5 lbs in two legs big around as two fingers and absolutely delicious. We've always had great lobster but get bored of it after a lifetime of having it.

We have many talapia in our pond here in Kapoho. It is brackish water (part salt/part fresh) and stays pretty clear & clean (its gets tested). We also have one koi and one puffer too. We feed them primarily dog food, and bread. They also eat all the moss etc on the bottom.

They are plenty entertaining also so we cant bare to fish them out for dinner!

HADave.

The crab legs were pre-packed.
I think there were two or three legs per bag.

I didn't look too closely because I was looking for fish, not crab.

HADave, 'Jumbo' crab legs are on sale at Foodland/Sack'n'Save for $9.99, snow crab clusters for $5.99. Probably less at some of the larger chains.
