I had those purple double ruffle ones in IL and still have some seeds. When I get things settled and unpacked (movers are coming today) I can give you some. Meanwhile I have the single flowered peach colored ones (tree variety) here. If you want to come take a cutting, send me an e-mail@ EastBayPotter@aol.com [Big Grin]

when the craziness of unpacking is over, let me know when you come across some seeds. I need to do a little more research on doing cuttings I think you have to have part of a root to start the tall tree trumpet flowers. maybe someone on here will know. I must be nuts, since it doesnt seem like too many people are into datura. and No I am not planning on using them as a drug, ive read enough horror stories on what it can do to you, my days of expeirmenting is long over, I value life way to much.
I just happen to love the flowers and the fragrence of the datura.

Lostboy, I have the larger pink trumphet datura, and they root readily from cuttings, with no rooting hormone required. In fact, when I prune them and throw the branches on my brushy compost pile, the often root and have to be pulled up and left on a grate to dry out before they will compost.

oh man Right on. Thanks JerryCarr, growing things here seem to be so much easier than on the mainland, I am so used to only having two and a half months of grow time in the summer.

Devany let me know when I can come out and get a start.

Hey jerryCarr do happen to know how long from a cutting until it will begin blooming? The starts I bought are only about 2 and a half feet tall at the moment, my yellow one is already getting some flower heads. but the white and pink are not doing anything yet.

Has anyone started datura from seed here? From what I read it can take up to 60 days for germination, wondering if is faster here?

Depends on the size and age of the cutting, as well as the season. I have had plants from cuttings bloom in less than six months.

I planted purple Datura seeds I bought from www.tradewindsfruit.com, and out of 12 seeds I now have one plant. It took about 30-40 days not sure.
I have one yellow from seed 3" tall,(took at least 60 days), have the peach 3' tall( bought potted at ') and now the pink/red from cutting. All but the purple are Brugmansia.

The treelike shrub angel trumpets, brugmansia, are South American daturas. They grow great from cuttings as was said. In fact, even back in California I had a length of stalk that was lying in the yard for months and then it sprouted.

I bought a purple ruffled datura of the common jimsonweed type a few years ago from either Paradise Plants or Garden Exchange, and it did OK for a few months but then died. Perhaps they don't like the conditions here, I'm not sure. I don't kill many plants, at least not in Hawai'i. [Big Grin]

One thing about brugmansia, they like lots of fertilizer. The serious growers feed them twice a week (yes, week.)
