Well, believe it or not the county cut down the large shade trees around the concession building in the park.
I am not sure what kind of trees they were, but they will be missed come summer.

The trees behind the backstop and to the left.
Not a good picture, but I did not know I needed to get a picture of them, they must have been there a hundred years.

From looking at pictures of Monkeypod trees, I would say yes that is what they were...

I have watched with some astonishment the Park and Recreation Department destroying trees island wide. Not sure of the logic. While they claim to have no funds to maintain anything they seem to have funds for tree removals. I will hope that this is typical of the skewed judgment of P&R director Pat Englehard. We are all hoping that her term is ended and someone with more sense appointed to the post. Still awaiting word from Mayor Kenoi.

Does anyone know what happens to the lumber derived from tree cutting? Lumber such as monkeypod has significant value for furniture and craft items. Is the lumber being sold, with profit going back to P & R,taken to the dump, or being diverted to private use without payment? Absent a stated policy with regard to tree cutting and disposal by the County, it would be interesting to find out what the process actually is. In most things political, it always is interesting to 'follow the money'.

I did not pay close attention, but it looked to me like they were cutting it up in to 2 to 4 foot sections, and they had a chipper going for days...
The trunks were still there yesterday (at least one of them was) it was about 6 to 8 foot tall...
I have heard through the grapevine that one of the reasons they were cut down was because they were tearing up the sidewalks and basketball court... which leads me to believe they have a few more days of work digging up the roots.

May be monkeypod; may be (more likely?) albizia.
In either case, they are definitely not 100 years old; or would be much, much larger.
Of course, if one is truly interested a call to the Dept P&R could yield accurate information: what kind of trees; why they were cut; etc.
Could be, the limbs were falling on people at the park.

Don’t quote me for this but I remember being at a blessing a few weeks ago for playground equipment at this park’ Fred Blas and Auntie E were there receiving their pats on the back as usual for getting the job done. I’m wondering if this is the location that has been chosen as the site. If it is, it seems pretty lame to me to destroy something as beautiful as these monkey pod trees for some playground stuff. Also shouldn’t it be brought to the residents before such a drastic measure is implemented. There certainly is enough room at this park for both. Or maybe the county was tired of maintaining these trees. [very sad]
