Bok Choy
#1
I planted some bok choy seeds two days ago and they are already sprouting! I swear that is the most amazing vegetable! I use it more and more in salads as a nice mix and it was great in our omlette the other night!

If you don't grow it - try! It grows fast and is very prolific. Very little bug problem - spray once in a while and it's fine.

Carrie is right. Bok choi is the wonder veggie in my garden, and it never fails to produce. Wong bok is another winner, with a slightly spicy taste akin to mustard greens.

Cheers,

A question on topic came up yesterday at Richardson's Beach dive event: how can you tell when Bok Choy is ready to be harvested?

I harvested 2 of my Bak Choi today. They were large and leafy and were just starting to put a flower shoot out. I cut the whole plant but wish now I had just harvested the leaves a little at a time. I read that it gets bitter if it flowers.

I plan to stir fry it with oil and oyster sauce. I had it that way in Singapore and it was great.

I still have a plant in a one gallon pot. They seem to do well in a pot. I potted it with compost, peat moss and perl-lite (1/3 of each).

I will plant some more because these ones were just an experiment to see if they grow here OK. Carrie is right they grow great with (in my case) no bug problems at all.

bon-appetit

Andrew

ps when is the best time of year to plant tomatoes?

I think it's up to you when you want to harvest really. They are good young and when they mature more they are still good. Mine never get the chance to flower LOL!

I also have some choi sum seeds which I did this weekend and am trying a seed that Dean & Sharolyn gave me - kai lan. The choi sum is great...let it flower and you can chop and cook much like broccoli or spinach. I think it's like Chinese Broccoli.

The great thing is that I get frustrated waiting for lettuce to grow and bok choi seems to really like growing quickly...great substitute.

Andrew - hay I was so grateful the day I got turned onto Oyster Sauce! Yummy.

bok choy is fantastic....i also do a more compact version called tatsui which is nice, you can trim all the heads and it will come back again full in no time at all...great veggie in stir fries, caseroles, stews etc....

just starting a new batch of choy sum which also comes out very quick.

Carrie; Jerry; Noel; anyone else:

I am very happy with the way my experiment went with Bok Choi. I grew them in 1 gallon plastic pots in a compost, peat moss, Perlite mixture with a 1/3 ratio.

Question: Have any of you grew this year round? Or is there certain seasons when it's best to grow it. Ideally I would like to plant it on a rotation basis whereby I would plant 2 plants each week so when it starts to produce I would have 2 ready each week and plant 2 new ones each week as well. That way I would be stocked with fresh Bok Choi year round.

Thoughts, ideas, input??

Andrew, this grows so fast for me...I have them in smaller pots now like yours' and also two 15 gal pots that always have them growing.

I've been growing bok choi and choi sum since maybe last May or so...No matter when - it does like to grow.

I'm looking forward to more Choi Sum and also the Kai Lan I am trying.

P.S. Andrew - I so know what you mean about having it growing all the time...I am trying that with broccoli and carrots. They take some time to grow, so I'd really have to have several stages I think.
