good companion plant for pineapple?
#1
I have a bed of pineapple & want to plant a companion herb or groundcover. Has anyone else tried it? I haven't found anything on the net (yet). I'd really like to do edible peanuts or oregano...anything to choke out the dang weeds [Big Grin]

Aloha Erin! Dean gave me some spearmint from their garden and it loves to grow! In fact, Sharolyn was saying that if people mow over it, it really spreads and grows well.

OOh! Sounds good Carrie! I'm going to attempt strawberries and green onions. I'm only going to do half of the pineapple bed so I can see how the PA's react.

I would love to do some strawberries...are you doing them in one of those pots with the holes in it? Is it cool enough here to do them? (I love the Waimea ones...)[:X]

I'm trying them straight in the ground & crossing my fingers that they can handle the climate down here. I got mine at Rozette's in HPP, so I'm assuming they survive here!

Strawberries seem to do quite well here at the top of the Shores. I got mine at Rozette's too and have already enjoyed a few ripe berries with more coming on. They'll be even better with a little more sunshine. Got 'em in raised beds; wasn't sure if the slugs would eat them all up before we could, so put them in the screenhouse.

We used to have an organic U-Pick strawberry farm (back in Idaho); I'm so glad to find that they do well here. What a surprise!

Not to usurp the pineapple thread... I also would love to know if something works to keep the weeds down around the pineapple. It's sure a 'pain' to weed them.

ring your pineapple bed in cucumbers and let them sprawl over them - osmocote both crops in early spring and fall. pack the pineapples together tightly, i.e., every eighteen inches with taller ones on the north side.

Rozette's is in HPP, I think 28th and Kaloli. Go down Kaloli & turn left on 28th. Rozettes is on the makai corner.

FWIW, I got a of bag of strawberry crowns at Home Depot WAL MART on Saturday (10 crowns for $3). I'm interested to see how the HD WMstrawberries compare with the Rozettes Smile I also found blueberry and pomegranate at Home Depot Wal Mart. I brought a blueberry, despite my gut gardener instincts screaming 'it won't grow in Kapoho'...but my lust for blueberries overrode my judgement [Big Grin]. Crossing my fingers.

Mint generally needs a lot of water and only partial sunshine. Other than that it can easily take over any place like that where it is planted. It is usually put in pots to contain it, as it grows by ryzomes. It generally will not tolerate hot dry summers.

You can buy several varities of mint at Paradise Plants or if you want standard mint, buy a bunch of it at the grocery store/farmer's market, take off the bottom leaves and put it in a vase of water. In a few days roots will develop. You can also take cuttings, dip in Rootone and then in wet sand. Roots will develop quickly.

I use mints a lot in cooking and in beverages and it is a great thing to have growing near the kitchen. [8D]
