Hi all,
I am a teacher at Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science Public Charter School (HAAS).
Our REAL Class program is in recruiting mode for the 2009/10 school year. We are starting a new class of twenty 5th graders. REAL Class is an "accelerated" program where a mix of independent study, small group work, and whole class direct instruction is designed so that every student can find his/her own "ceiling" of potential.
Our program is clearly not for everyone, but I encourage any parent (and child) with an interest in what's out there to look us up at:

Parents with 4th graders should definitely check this out. I know Kirt (so does my son), and we both can attest that he's a great teacher/role model for the kids.

Kirt is the best.
Hands down one of the most creative, yet rigorous, wonderful educators on the planet. The Real Thing.
I'm happy to have had the chance to work with him once upon a time, and am pleased that his Real School idea has not only become a reality here in Puna, but flourishes.
As Tim's already mentioned, parents of top-notch, curious, eager-to-work 4th graders would indeed be wise to investigate this option for their child.

Hi, everyone,
I thought I'd add a quick hello here to introduce myself, too, since I'll be the teacher of the 5th grade next year. Though I'm sure Kirt appreciates the support of the last few posts. :o)
I'm in my second year of teaching at HAAS (after a couple of years teaching in Hilo and several on the mainland) and I couldn't be happier to be part of such a great program.

Thanks for the information. We just went into HAAS the other day to inquire about programs for my 4th and 1st graders and they mentioned nothing about this program which would be ideal for my daughter (she is an advanced student and since moving to the islands I feel she needs a more challenging education). I will be sending in an application ASAP.

The Feb 4th, Wednesday HAAS open house has been delayed. Not sure when the new date will be. Apparently, the details for the new application procedures across the school are not yet formalized.
