solar hot water heaters
#1
I'm interested in installing a solar water heater. Any suggestions as to the best model and/or recommendations for installers? I’d appreciate any advice or tips.

Don't rely upon one that requires a guy named "Dean" from Honolulu to send it to you.

If it say's it will only work about 20 hours... Expect it to work about 40 hours... or send it packing.

Do make plenty of phone calls until you find the model you want... or at least need to get your water at least a little warmed up.

Don't rely upon anything until you see it actually working.

Sign all contracts... and remember... even then... you still just might not get one installed.

Sitall knows what I'm talking about.

I'm sure there is others out there that can give even more helpful hints.

There are two basic types.

The convection type has the tank on the roof, above the solar panels. There is an electric back up in the tank if the water temperature drops too low.

The other type is considered a water heater with solar back-up. There is tank that looks like a regular water heater with a small pump that cycles the water through the solar panels.

Each have pros and cons, e.g. the convection type is a lot of weight on the roof, the other type uses electricity to power the pump.

We have a convection type and it works great.

Drainpipe,Plumbing and Solar has an interesting line, certified for rebate, they install with excellent results. Their systems work very well, and they are quick and efficient!

There is another system available - a convection type without the bulk of a tank above the panels - the panel is thicker and acts as it's own storage tank. I hope to install it with an on demand gas heater as a back-up.
