Did people see the article in the New York Times on new gay vacation getaways? Puna was mentioned, there was a photo of Kehena Beach. The masses cannot be far behind

It's not the first time Pahoa/Puna has been mentioned as a new gay Mecca. There's an archived article online from Honolulu Weekly, Feb. 18, 2004, Titled "Puna gets a makeover" Mentions the Puna Palisades, but calls it something, um, slightly different. Ah, the mahulani!

Mecca Schmeca...forgive me for being adverse to labels. I think if you like it here and you feel like you will thrive whether it is spiritually, financially or physically...then you will know for yourself if it's where you wanna be. I don't think being a certain gender would make people "flock." Am I being naive? Well perhaps - I dunno. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! LOL! (Ah the Libra...such a hard time with big decisions having to do with fairness...)

Ya know, FB accused me in an email of jumping on the bandwagon. When the truth is really that I tend to champion the underdog...it would be much easier to jump on a BANDWAGON. (LOL! I always think of Ferris Bueller when he jumps on the bandwagon and sings Danke Schoen - okay so it's late awright?)

Another Ferris Bueler fan - way to go Carrie. (I watched that movie with my ninth graders at Waiakea High - good messages in there.) Ashland is known by every other town in our valley as the gay Mecca of Oregon. That's one of the reasons we like it here -It's a very accepting town. I even fell off the Down with Labels Bandwagon the other day to jump on the Ashland's the New Age Mecca Bandwagon when I was telling someone about it. LOL. Neither my son nor I are gay, but we like living in places that our accepting. Not like right wing Grants Pass where other boys were getting all homophobic on him for his long air, soft voice and mannerisms.
I think we're gonna like being back in Puna as much as we like it here - better cuz we'll be in Hawaii :-)

There is a mostly gay eco-resort called Kalani on the Red Road and a couple of gay B&B's in Puna. Not exactly a vast infrastructure for gay tourism. Many of us, however, prefer, less stereotypical travel arrangements. When my partner and I were visiting here, we stayed in independent vacation rentals where we were welcomed and made to feel at home. IMHO Puna attracts a different sort of gay tourist, just as it attracts a different sort of heterosexual tourist. Think more laid back and into nature. We could start a whole thread on why more gay people seem to be settling here. Maybe later.

When my partner and I bought in Seaview about 5 yrs ago we had no clue. It turned out our RE agent was gay and so was good part of the SeaView community. We bought not knowing of
the gay community in Puna Palisades,Kehena beach or SeaView.
We now live here.
We came from a small town where where closed minds dwell. We still aren't quit sure why everybody worries who is straight or gay. Most of our friends are not gay. We met young. And will celebrate 24 yrs together in April. I love it here, straight or gay. SeaView seems to except
all. Please remeber that our sexuality is a small part of who each of us truelly is.

If all we are is straight or gay. there is no Mecca.

Unless you are planning on sleeping with the person, why does their sexual orientation matter? Are they polite, respectful and good people? Is there aloha in their heart? Then anything else doesn't really matter, does it?

Most gay folks I know are more "urban" than "rural" and would much prefer to vacation or live in Honolulu (or New York) than Puna. Considering how many hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars Hawaii Visitors Bureau spends on advertising and how long they've been working on getting tourists, I don't think one article is going to create "masses" of tourists. If it does, let HVB know and maybe they will pay a finder's fee or something.
