New to the Puna District
#1
Aloha from Dave and Tim,

Where to start.....basically I/we LOVE the big island, especially Fern Forest and the Puna District.

A little bit about ourselves: We are very much the outdoorsy type, camping, fishing, cultivating....etc. and are very much interested and respect in the value of mother nature and all that she creates. Our purpose in life is to live and respect the surroundings that has been so graciously been given to us...We are not the type to consider religion and/or politics to be included in that; but, don't take that the wrong way, every ones different and live and let live.We are very much interested in learning new ideas on prospecting a beautiful and wonderful experience in living in Hawaii. Hopefully, in about 2 yrs, we'll be able to sell our house in Albuquerque and move to our property, permanantly; but, for now, 2/3 times a year will have to do. We're not in the belief that bigger is better or the more the marrier, we believe, simple is better...By the time we do make the Big Move, our intentions are to have learned a great deal on living w/ all that Pele has offered the island and also understand that you Can teach an old dog new tricks(so-to-speak)

We visited (the first time for me) Hawaii, last year, in the ending of April/beginning of May...3 days in Hilo and 10 days on Poipu, kauai and just fell in love w/ the Hilo area/ the people were just so friendly...I new instantly that this was the place I wanted to spend the rest of my life in. I do understand that you get the every once in a while, people who judge a person before getting to know them(as of any where else), but is all good, makes life a little more interesting....and the great thing about the people in the Puna area is that there is not a huge tourist population, which I am so over considering I spent most of my young adult-hood in Florida, the tourist capital of the world.

We are interested in growing our own fruits and vegetables, and some livestock(some chickens, a cow, maybe a pig) and possibly having a small booth at a local farmers market, but we'll see, the possibilities are endless. If anyone has any advise about doing this, we'd love to hear from you.

I do understand that some people are not into the "mainlander" moving into their territory, but let me just say that we are here to respect the surrounding area and all that it has to offer and as far as "mainlanders" go, we think that a majority of them are pigs, wanting more and more and more and still think that it's not enough. So, all I can ask of any locals who are curious about us, please, atleast, give us a chance and get to know us.

Anyone who has ideas on helping us conserve the forest and live within the means of respecting, we would love your input...

Welcome to Punaweb. You will likely get lots of advice. Here's some to start: Use the SEARCH function. There are five years of topics here and a lot of basic stuff is pretty well covered. My best suggestion to newcomers and visitors is to assume the best and ask questions.

In places like Volcano you can find a brochure titled "How to build in a rain forest" with some good, practical ideas in it.

Gave a good Puna time.

Aloha! You are in the right place for information about living in Puna...there are some real old-timers as well as some really well-informed newbies. We are all in this Puna melting pot together - LOL!

Feel free to share your questions and experience with us and also - there is a "Search" function which will help with tons of subjects that have already been discussed.

In any case...we all have something wonderful in common. E komo mai. [Smile][Smile]
