Speaker Bio
Sarah Brooks, Senior Sustainability Advisor

Sarah Brooks brings eleven years of sustainability field experience to her work with The Natural Step Canada . As a Senior Sustainability Advisor, she works with businesses, communities and other organizations to help them move strategically towards a sustainable future. A certified natural building instructor, Sarah has worked with people from over twenty countries to help them design and build structures from locally available, minimally processed and rapidly renewable materials. She brings numerous skills to her work as a Senior Sustainability Advisor, including a background in curriculum design for sustainability issues, group facilitation and leadership, and group strategizing and mobilization. Sarah holds a masters degree in “Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability” from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden where she completed her thesis on sustainable music festivals.

Some of Sarah’s clients include the Landmark Group of Builders in Alberta , global chemical producer Rohm & Haas, the Atlantic Canada Sustainability Initiative, the City of Ottawa, BC Hydro, Accommodation and Real Estate Services of British Columbia, and the Town of Collingwood .
Mike Purcell, Senior Sustainability Advisor

As a Senior Sustainability Advisor, Mike uses his expertise in the field of sustainable development to provide solutions for businesses, communities and other organizations. Having worked as a community planner and municipal planning consultant for twenty years, Mike brings a wealth of sustainable community development experience to his work with The Natural Step. As the General Manager of Planning and Development Services for Whistler, BC, Mike guided the first two phases of the resort municipality’s Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, which is based on The Natural Step Framework. Whistler has since received numerous awards for its sustainability plan, including the United Nations-endorsed international award for Livable Communities in the “Planning for the Future” category. Mike holds a master’s degree in “Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability” from the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden where he completed his thesis on opportunities for global sustainability.

Some of Mike’s clients include the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia; the Regional Municipality of York, Ontario; Town of Blue Mountains, Ontario, Collingwood, Ontario; Accommodation and Real Estate Services, British Columbia and the Association of Yukon Communities. He has also worked with major businesses such as phone provider Bell Aliant, Atlantic Canada, and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta.

I can tell you what does it take. Be diligent and do the business the right way, and you will be successful regardless of what kind of business you are in or what the market conditions are.

To me what is a bit intriguing about this presentation is the Canadian perspective. Canada is considerably more pragmatic and less political that the U.S. so a Canadian view on sustainability might have some interesting nuggets in it. And if anyone is noticing things getting warmer it will be a Canadian.

Unfortunately, not all businesses thrive and survive in this economy. However, I believe that with what you say it can be done for most businesses including starting anew and taking market share from existing businesses. It is not much but I have hired two part time computer techs to help me with my over flow. How many companies do you know that are hiring even P/T help right now?
