We are afraid of slugs this year so Jayne bought some Topsy Tuvy’s. She bought 2 $1.50 tomato plants at Wal-Mart and bingo. The plants are doing very well, we’ve taken 2 already and 2 more will be ready for picking this weekend.

Scott,
Did you buy these on Island or send away for them? Are the tomatos still producing for you? I tried one here in Michigan. It was doing well, huge plant, baby tomotos and all, but then died. I was told that most likely it got some sort of blight. It seems to be happening here a lot with the Topsy Turvys, even was a bit about it on Good Morning America today. Someone suggested that I needed to use copper to prevent it next time, but I'm not sure if this is applied as a spray to the leaves, added to the soil or added some other way. We will be on Island this winter and thought it might be fun to give a couple of Topsys try.

There is a tomato blight all across the Mainland this summer. It has been traced to garden starts grown in the south where the blight is more common and then distributed across over much of the country through big box stores. Apparently the same nursery supplied everyone this year. There was a really good article on this in the NY Times last week.

I will be arriving this month and will be bringing some topsy turvy's with me to use so it would be appreciated to continue to hear how they work!

I actually saw a big display of the Topsy turvy's at Walmart last week in the outdoor garden center, right by the orchid plants. I was given one as a gift by my neighbor and when I put it together I had my doubts, because when you water it the dirty water runs on to the plant itself. I had read that if at all possible to avoid wetting tomato plant's leaves. However, it's been two weeks and my Roma tomato has more than doubled in size, and seems very happy. Time will tell. So far so good. Angela

We got ours for 9.00 each at walmart on the mainland, in Montana this year. I've seen them for 15.00 at homedepot and 19.95 elsewhere. Our biggest problem with them was not being able to protect the plants from wind once we planted and hung them up, no matter where we moved them to. Our duaghter got on and its doing great, large plant, large tomatoes. You can grow several other veggies in them too, lke cucumbers.
And then, I dreamt of Hawaii...
