geez $1000 for a BBQ...? They all rust out anyway. I'm back to the mid-size Weber charcoal grill on my handmade wooden cart with wheels. However, I've decided it's time to grab the next sale on the little tailgate propane ones, the portable guys. Cooking space isn't that small really if you look at it, you can take it anywhere and when it rusts out, you're only out $30 or so. I save the grates for camping or home campfires.

Buy one at Sears, their Kenmore Elite line is the same as Viking. Get the extended warranty and they will come and replace any parts for free. We had the top of the line one in IL, moved it to CA and sold it with the house there. In 6 years they came and replaced the ignition, grates and burners several times. I think that the extended warranty cost us $36 a year, well worth it, especially in this environment.
If you get stainless steel, wipe it down with WD 40 or Stainless Cleaner at least once a week.

I love my gas Weber. I have used them for years but didn't move it. We used the small Weber Q here for the first year but I watched the sales carefully, and about 6 months ago picked up a gas Weber at Home Depot for the unheard of price of $199, already assembled. Probably one the best buys I ever made! I used the Genesis Silver in California, have the Elite 310 here.

BBQ's explode here. I have never seen anything like it. There is a company on Oahu that manufactures special Hawaii-resistant BBQ's, but don't bother. devany's right....get a warranty and be prepared to replace, replace, replace. A cover is essential.

We've got both (gas grill from Costco and a weber charcoal grill). The weber is superior for grilling, esp if you need really high heat for searing and indirect heat for slow cooking. I prefer this weber over gas.
We use the gas grill for rotisserie (sp?) chicken and prime rib.
If you're looking for a gas grill, get something with thick stainless steel. It will eventually show rust stains but they can be buffed out. Anything else will eventually rust away, esp by the ocean.

should have brought our weber charcoal grill with us when we moved here from o'ahu. will check costco the next time we go to that side of this island. the wilsons did some really nice rotisserie cornish game hens on their gas grill (kenmore elite stainless steel) and the veggies turned out perfect with the grilling wok.

The egg is the thing. We restored my father-in-law's original ceramic egg bbq and it works great. There are some metal parts but the majority is made of clay which cannot rust and looks cool on the lanai.
