Hawaiian Shores Recreational Estates

This subdivision has its own water, from its own well, and it is only 19 bucks a month. Water, from a well? In Hawaii? How can this be? Drinkable? Thoughts on subdivision? Fire Away Puna!

My understanding is that all 4 of those subdivisions have the same water company. I spent a couple weeks in Hawaiian Beaches and had no complaints about the water.

The list of available utilities there almost had me sold before I got there and found the jungle just a bit too dense for my tastes, as well as higher prices and that long drive down Kahakai from Pahoa. Prices are less high now, but I'd still be claustrophobic.

It should be noted that the water company in HSRE and adjacent subdivisions recently placed a moratorium on new water hook-ups. Existing homes will continue to be served, but new ones will have to go on catchment until the moratorium is lifted. One clever fellow I know has decided to go ahead and build a new home with a doughboy catchment which will serve as an above-ground swimming pool if and when he gets community water.

We've lived in Hawaiian Shores for a little over a year now, moved from Nanawale. The water is great- and it's nice not having to rely on the rainfall for water. Hawaiian Shores Rec has its own well, I believe the other 3 use Miller & Lieb water co.

The area we are in is not like a jungle at all, very dry and open, in fact. Paved streets, mail delivery, no complaints!

Jody's right. All 4 subdivisions have piped-in water, but HSRE has a separate well. Miller and Leib (the other company) has declared a moratorium, but HSRE has not.

Our new home is really pretty - not overgrown at all. It's so green but not jungl-y (?)...we're so glad we will have unlimited water just 20 bucks a month and mail delivery is a big plus...cable and paved roads...it was a nice package for us.

Yep, I know home inspectors that carry big water jugs with them to fill up whenever they do an inspection is HSRE.

I guess jungle is in the eye of the beholder, AND the block you look at. Come to think of it, there were a couple very civilized blocks just down from the wild one I was on.

Here's an important consideration: HSRE won't let you keep roosters!
