purchasing a greenhouse
#1
I'd like to start considering where to purchase a green house. Any suggestions on size and design as well as who to purchase from? I'm interested in a small one for home use, like 12-14 or something similar. I've also seen pictures of Liz's "screen house" and thought that seemed to be a neat idea. Would a screen house be sufficient at lower elevations?

Greenhouse Specialists offer aluminum structures of all sizes. I use shadescreen from Rudys in Keaau over a wooden frame house that I built over tables for holeinursery. This is very close to the ocean, so I placed the frame partially under a tree for protection from direct sun. Phylon roofing on a portion of the structure prevents delicate seedling from heavy rain damage. I am now growing nanea, naupake, pohuehue, and akia for native Hawaiian groundcovers.

We live in Nanawale at about 300' elevation, for a greenhouse I took a 12x20' portable garage enclosure from Costco. covered the sides with screen that we purchased from greenhouse specialist. It comes in 15' widths and can be cut in half to give you 2 7.5' wide strips. Then on the roof I used 4 mil UV stabilized poly vinyl film which i brought from the mainland. Made ends and door from 1" pvc pipe. raised beds from 2x8 lumber. Currently have 2 varieties of tomatoes, green/red bell peppers, habaneros, cucumbers, sugar daddy watermelons, chives, basil, garlic growing in there. pretty busy greenhouse but all are doing very well. No trouble from melon or white flies. Have copper wire around raised beds and treat for slugs outside of beds.

Asly, not sure what you want to use it for. I have 2 10X20 car port shelters from Home Depot, replaced the cover with a green house cover, 50% shade, from Rudy's shade. total about $325 each. I use them for orchids and they are good for me. You can wrap the sides with screen if it need to be enclosed, I havn't bothered. Am in Mt. View about 1500' elevation Ron

FYI, Rudy's shade moved to a new location near the Zoo.

Great ideas, I like the idea of using what can be found on the island, like the portable carports. I would think I would use it for certain flowers and tender veggies. Just looking for ideas at this point. Thanks again, Ann

dick, you forgot to mention the beautiful dill that you also have growing.

ann, you will be arriving within the next couple of weeks. see if you can't make arrangements with the wilsons to see how well their veggies are growing in their "green house". the tomato trees are full and over 5 ft. tall and producing a LOT of fruit.

We purchased a greenhouse from Greenhouse Specialists but I would go somewhere else if possible. Customer service is horrible and we had to go back a number of times for missing parts. It took several months longer to get it than they originally told us. At one point after six weeks when I went in to ask how much longer it would take to get it they asked which salesman I bought it from. When I said I didn't remember they said it wasn't entered in the computer yet so they would have to look through the paperwork on each person's desk to trace it!
