Ok, so the county's budget is in trouble...
Can someone tell me why the DWS has their Christmas lights on already. First of all it is still (barely but still) October. Secondly, we are nazi's about turning lights off to keep our bill down.
Did no one tell them to turn the lights off to save money ? and again the fact that it is not even Thanksgiving yet and the Happy Holidays sign is lit.

I agree! I don't like Christmas/holiday lights at all. What a WASTE of energy! I makes me a little miffed when you hear about people who complain because their power bill is so high because of their holiday light decorations. Then they say they "doing it for the public's enjoyment" give me a break. Sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. Much like when people go out in the forest and public lands and decorate trees with holiday decorations, then leave the crap up all year or forget about it so it's basically garbage. (that's another pet peeve). Anyway, yes, they could be saving money by cutting the lights, and what the heck let's get past Halloween for Pete's sake before the Christmas lights go up.
Enjoy the day! Ann

I do use LED lights on our tree and part of the lanai... but other than that our decor is all natural. Nothing wrong with some lights, but the only people who can see our house are on the ocean... and I am not lighting it up for them! We use timers too. A real pet peeve of mine is Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving... in stores or homes. That is just tacky and too commercial. I do not mind if they leave them up into early January... but after that is also tacky.

Hi Devany,
I can understand some holiday use of lights, even though every year I pull back more and more. I'm talking about people that totally outline their house, their landscaping, their drive and walkways, etc with lights. The folks that complain because their power bill went up between $500-$1000 for the holidays because of the lights. I don't have as much of a problem with using the lights sparingly or conscientiously (if that makes sense - I'm not sure).
I too agree with the whole commercialism of the decorations in the stores and elsewhere encouraging us all to shop for the holidays and consume. It is tacky!

Last year we decided to not use lights on the tree and did the old decorate with stringed popcorn, berries, and other natural findings. It turned out beautiful (kinda surprised me).
Didn't mean to steer the thread in a different direction however. Maybe the county should decorate with popcorn and berries :-)

Thats okay because my alternate rant was about Christmas decorations being out at the beginning of school.
When I was a kid, we thought it was special to go see all the lights and the magical Christmas displays at the stores the day AFTER Thanksgiving. But then we didnt have I-phones either.

Jumping on the band wagon here, but it is just sooooo disappointing that Christmas in the stores starts before Haloween! It should be a rule... Haloween, then Thanksgiving (my personal favorite holiday - everyone gets together and no one goes broke or in debt. Best gift is something home baked!) and finally Christmas. Sheesh..... I was hoping that leaving Southern California, we would leave that early holiday marketing stuff behind, but apparently not. We have taken some of the wonder out of it all for the kids.
Just a ranting opinion...

I was pretty disgusted to see Hilo HD had their Christmas section up and running weeks ago
